Joe Serafin was dominant in his seven innings on the mound on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park and helped the Kannapolis Intimidators beat Greensboro 7-2.
Kannapolis had 14 hits and has won 13 of its last 14 games.
Jon Gilmore delivered the game’s biggest hit, smoking a double to right-center with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh to give Kannapolis a 7-1 lead. The hit extended Gilmore’s hitting streak to 15 games.
Eduardo Escobar remained hot with three hits. Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits.
n Minor leagues
Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning on Saturday for New Britain.
n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) had three hits for Clinton on Saturday.
n College football
Wingate’s Phillip Hilliard (Salisbury) had a good day punting Saturday, averaging 42.4 yards on five kicks. His longest punt was 57 yards in a 38-17 win against West Georgia.
n Catawba athletics
Catawba’s volleyball team beat Fayetteville State 26-24, 25-10, 25-15 on Friday and also topped UNC Pmbroke 25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 28-26 on Friday in the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational.
Senior Jasmine Chunn led Catawba with nine kills vs. FSU and added a career-best 15 kills with six blocks in the win over UNC Pembroke. Freshman Alli Parrish picked up 10 kills against UNCP and seven in the opening win over Fayetteville State. Libero Mai Zoua Lo tallied 23 digs vs. UNCP and served five aces against FSU.
n Catawba’s women’s soccer team battled Pfeiffer to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Lefko Field.
The Falcons took a brief 2-1 lead in the 85th minute before the Indians fought back for the tie with a goal in the 87th minute.
Pfeiffer’s Alyssa Wombwell headed home a cross for a 2-1 lead. Alyssa Retundie connected from 10 yards out for Catawba for the tie.
Megan Blevins scored early for the Falcons. Merritt Rollins scored the Indians’ first goal.
n Sophomore Deon Cuffie-Joseph scored the lone goal to lift host Catawba to a 1-0 win over North Greenville in men’s soccer on Saturday night at Frock Field. Both teams are 1-1.
The one-touch strike from Cuffie-Joseph came from 15 yards after a through ball from freshman Daniel Bailey in the 37th minute.
The Indians made the goal stand up as senior goalkeeper Tyler Held posted three saves in earning the clean sheet.
n Seton Hill topped host Catawba 5-1 in field hockey on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. The Griffins improve to 2-0 with the victory, while the Lady Indians fall to 0-1.
n Pfeiffer athletics
In the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational, Pfeiffer’s women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 to Wingate on Friday and swept Fayetteville State. On Saturday, Pfeiffer swept Elizabeth City State but fell 3-0 to Lenoir-Rhyne.
n Hole-in-one
Rich Schrader made a recent hole-in-one on No. 6 at Warrior Golf Club.
The hole played 142 yards from the blue tees. He made his first career ace with a pitching wedge.
Witnessing the shot were Chad Steen, Brian Craft and Ryan Craft.
n Local golf
Local girls competed in the Precision Golf Junior Championship that was held recently at Bryan Park in Greensboro.
In the Bell Division, Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 80-84 ó 164 and finished 13th. Lily Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 91-93 ó184 and was 24th. Amber Lyerly (Salisbury) shot 91-102 ó 193 and was 28th.
Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher finished second in the Furtures Division, shooting 75-83 ó 158.
n Local cyclists
Several cyclists from the local Carolina Masters team raced in the S.C. State Championship cycling road race on Saturday.
Any licensed riders were eligible to compete, even if out of state.

n Basketball camp
A basketball camp for boys in grades 6-12 will be held at South Rowan YMCA on Aug. 29 from 10-3.
Scouting services will video and evaluate each player. Skill training will be conducted by Bob MacKinnon, head coach of the Colorado 14ers NBA Development League champions.

n Hurley Y programs
Over-32 pick-up basketball will be played on Wednesday nights at Hurley YMCA starting Sept. 16. Cost is $15 for Y members and $25 for non-members.
n A 4-on-4 adult coed volleyball league starts in September. Cost is $125 per team or $30 per individual.
n In the planning stages are a table tennis tournament, coed flag football and adult coed indoor soccer.
