Jon Gilmore’s ninth-inning home run was not enough, as Greensboro handed Kannapolis a 5-4, 10-inning loss on Sunday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
Ryan Keedy crushed a homer off Enrique Lechuga on a 3-2 pitch to start the 10th and send the Grasshoppers home a winner.
Keedy’s longball countered the earlier heroics of Gilmore, who was down to his final strike before he clubbed a two-out, two-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center against Jared Yecker.
Kannapolis’ magic number for clinching the second-half championship remained at four, as West Virginia held on for a 9-8 win over Hickory on Sunday afternoon.
– Minor leagues
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) was 1-for-4 for the Kannapolis Intimidators on Sunday and has six hits in four games in the SAL since his promotion from Bristol.
Kannapolis plays in Greensboro tonight and is home on Tuesday.
* Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) won his first decision in Double A on Sunday when New Britain defeated Trenton 5-3.
Steedley only pitched to one batter, but he entered the contest at an opportune time in the fifth inning.
The Minnesota Twins prospect and former Charlotte 49er has enjoyed a great month of August and has lowered his ERA to 3.07 with a long string of scoreless relief appearances.
Between Fort Myers and New Britain, Steedley is 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA. He’s struck out 56 batters in 65 innings.
* Tim Smith (Catawba) pitched a scoreless inning for Kingsport on Saturday and is also enjoying a nice run out of the bullpen.
* Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit another homer for Great Lakes on Sunday, his fifth since he was promoted.
* Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) went 2-for-2 with a walk for Clinton in a 5-0 victory against Quad Cities on Sunday. Seager has his batting average back up to .285 after a slump.
* Winston-Salem used a six-run first inning to trigger a 7-4 victory over Lynchburg on Sunday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park. A night after going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, Seth Loman smacked another homer and drove in three to help the Dash maintain first place in the Carolina League’s Southern Division.

Reserved parking for Friday’s Salisbury home football game with Carson can be purchased in the school office from 8-3:45 through Thursday.
Season parking passes are $15, while individual passes are $3 each.

Michael Childress, 10, of Salisbury won his 2nd USTA tournament in a row by winning the Boys 10s at the Statesville Country Club over the weekend.
Childress and his partner won the doubles championship 8-4 in the final. He won two matches in straight sets before winning 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 in the championship match.

Aundrae Allison (A.L. Brown) caught a 70-yard TD pass from Erik Ainge to help the New York Jets beat the New York Giants 27-25 late Saturday night.
– College cross country
Catawba’s men placed fifth in the eight-team Erskine Invitational Meet held on Saturday morning.
Christian Crifasi led the men. He was fifth in 20:32 on the 6K course.
The Catawba women were seventh. Maleah Cole led with a 17:28 clocking. She was 12th on a 4K course.
Mars Hill’s men and Pfeiffer’s women won the event. Magen Abernathy led Pfeiffer with a winning time of 16:59. Pfeiffer’s Kaitlyn Mullis was one second behind her.

Boo Tesh scored 15 seconds into overtime to lead Pfeiffer to a 3-2 win at Brevard on Sunday.
