Area sports briefs: Lebowitz sharp in Salisbury's shutout win

Salisbury’s girls tennis team faced former CCC rival Ledford in a non-conference match and won 9-0 against the previously unbeaten Panthers.
Hannah Lebowitz, Joy Loeblein, Erika Nelson, Katelyn Storey, Anna Page and Sierra Davis were singles winners for the Hornets (9-0). Lebowitz, a senior, won 6-0, 6-1 over Tiffany Vanhpraseuth in a battle of talented top seeds.
“It was a high-quality match, and the score was not indicative of how well Tiffany played,” Salisbury coach Chris Myers said. “It’s probably the best I’ve ever seen Hannah play. She was at another gear. She had great variety, hit with pace, hit with depth, and her confidence was sky-high.”
Lebowitz-Page, Nelson-Storey and Loeblein-Davis won in doubles.
n Salisbury won 9-0 over Central Davidson on Wednesday and improved to 2-0 in the CCC.
Lebowitz, Loeblein, Nelson, Storey, Page and Davis were part of a singles sweep, with Loeblein winning 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 against Haley Hanes at No. 2.
Nelson-Storey, Loeblein-Page and Mary Margaret Mills-Mally Fisher won in doubles.
n North Rowan continued its strong start to YVC play with an 8-1 win over South Stanly.
Corbin Bennett, Diamond Jackson, Kelli Berry, Haley Ridenhour and Caitlin Crawford won at the first five singles spots. Bennett-Jackson, Berry-Crawford and Ridenhour-Catherine Crawford won in doubles for the Cavs (6-2, 6-1 YVC).
North, which lost to Gray Stone in a league opener, still must face conference favorite East Montgomery before completing its first trip through the home-and-away YVC schedule.
n Third-seeded Madison Rusher won in West Rowan’s 8-1 loss to Lake Norman.n Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team beat Central Cabarrus 3-0 on Thursday.
“They put up a good fight, and their keeper must have made 30 saves,” Salisbury coach Tom Sexton said. “But we’re getting scoring from everywhere.”
Matt Cervantes got the ball to Paul Kollie with a diagonal pass, and Kollie beat the keeper for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Kenny Bonilla found Jordy Sanchez at the right post, and Sanchez converted for a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the second half.
Gerardo Sosa’s cross set up a header by Matt Marshall for the final goal.
Salisbury keeper Connor Miller made two key saves when the game was still tight.
Salisbury (9-0-1) is off for more than a week. The next game for the Hornets is a Saturday afternoon contest at West Stanly.
n Prep golf
West Rowan won a four-team match held at McCanless on Wednesday.
West shot 130 and topped North Davidson (134), Davie (137) and East Rowan (147).
Katie Knepp (39), Alex Mills (45) and Ashlynn Perry (46) were the scorers for West.
Davie’s K.K. Brake shot 36 for medalist honors. Samantha Haviland shot 46 to lead East.
Lindsey Ball had a 45 to lead the Knights.
n Jayvee football
West Rowan’s jayvee football team beat Salisbury 20-0 on Thursday to halt the Hornets’ nine-game winning streak.
Robin Moulton intercepted a pass for the Hornets. Christian Cabrera played well on the defensive line.
West’s TDs came on two long runs and a punt return.
n College volleyball
Catawba topped Pfeiffer 19-25, 25-11, 27-25, 27-25 at Goodman Gym on Thursday.
Shay Meeks led Catawba (6-4) with 15 kills.
Pfeiffer was sparked by Jordan O’Bryant with 13 kills.
n Middle school football
West Rowan’s eighth-graders opened the season by beating Lexington 30-2.
Keyows Weeks had 155 rushing yards and scored on carries of 50 and 30 yards.
Michael Pinkston threw a 33-yard TD pass to Broderick Avery. Derrick Fortson scored on a 26-yard run and addd a two-point conversion. Pinkston and Nick Collins also tallied two-point conversions.
Dalton Vaughn and Daisean Reddick made fumble recoveries. Zeke Blackwood, Teoz Mauney and Malik Crudup were leaders for the Bulldog defense.
West plays host to Corriher-Lipe on Wednesday.
n Southeast’s eighth-graders fought to a scoreless tie at halftime and capitalized on second-half turnovers to beat Erwin 12-0.
Myquon Stout and Darius Gabriel scored TDs. Tre Williams led the defense.
Southeast is home next week against Knox.
n Middle school softball
Southeast defeated Erwin 7-6 on Thursday.
Lacee Hunsucker struck out 10 and was the winning pitcher for the Patriots.
n Middle school tennis
Salisbury Academy beat Forsyth Country Day 9-0 on Wednesday. Madeline Hoskins, Anna Flynn, Alexandra Drye, Mackenzie Beaver, Ann Rollins Johnson and Olivia Smith won matches for the Jaguars.
n North Hills volleyball
North Hills split its first four matches of the season, beating the Forsyth Hawks and Mooresville Christian and losing to the Greensboro Panthers and Woodland.
