CONCORD ó The Small Business Center at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is offering courses for people planning to start a small business and small business owners who want to learn more about basic accounting.
The center will offer the REAL course, which provides step-by-step instructions on starting a small business in Cabarrus and Rowan counties. The class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 6 through Nov. 5. The course fee is $120.
The center will offer two classes of “Basic Accounting for Small Businesses.” The first class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, and the second class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Nov. 3 to17. The course fee is $65.
Also, the center will offer two classes of “QuickBooks Pro 2009 Level I.” The first class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 8 through Nov. 5. The second class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 1 to 9. The course fee is $79.

Harris Teeter matching labels in program for school supplies
Harris Teeter Together in Education is participating in Campbell’s Labels for Education Promotion and Contest benefiting local schools.
Through Sept. 30, for every customer who is linked to a participating Together in Education School and uses a Very Important Customer card to purchase participating Campbell’s product, Harris Teeter will donate one label per product purchase to the school.
At the end of the program, the top three schools will win additional labels to purchase much needed supplies.

Hilbish dealership marks 55th year in Kannapolis with prizes
KANNAPOLIS ó Hilbish Motor Co., a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealer, has been in business 55 years.
Buddy Hilbish purchased Yoos Motor Company of downtown Kannapolis in April 1954. In June 1957, he bought Show-O’Neal of Concord and named it Concord Motors. Then in 1968, Hilbish combined the two at the present location on South Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis.
To celebrate, the dealership is giving away 55 prizes. The “Drive 55” program will culminate with a community event on Saturday, when someone will win a 2008 Ford Focus. Community members can register online or at the dealership to become eligible to win.

Displaced workers can take RCCC class for free
CONCORD ó The Small Business Center at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will offer the FastTrac New Venture entrepreneurship program at no cost to help displaced workers plan and start their own small businesses.
The class will run for three weeks from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 22 through Oct. 8, at the South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove. The program is offered at no cost to displaced workers in Cabarrus and Rowan counties.
Course topics include identifying and reaching a target market, setting financial goals, planning a product or service, building an effective team and more. The program is known for its hands-on activities that help participants focus on their particular business ideas.

FastTrac New Venture is a program of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, based in Kansas City, Mo. Goodman Millwork given safety award for no lost time
Goodman Millwork Inc. of Salisbury was honoroed by the Architectural Woodwork Institute and its insurance safety partner, CNA, for earning the “Zero Lost Time Accident Achievement Award” in the 2009 safety awards program.
The institute had 37 manufacturing members that had no lost time in the previous year.
It also had 25 members that were honored with a “Safety Improvement Certificate of Recognition” in the 2009 safety awards program for reductions in their incident rate from the previous year. Goodman Millwork also earned this honor.
All award winners will be recognized during the Architectural Woodwork Institute/CNA Safety Awards Lunch on Oct. 8 during the Architectural Woodwork Institute’s Annual Convention Oct. 7 to 10 in Alexandria, Va.
Two complete heating, air conditioning course
Tony Frost, service manager, and Jimmie Johnson, sales consultant, for S.A. Sloop Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., have completed an advanced heat pump and air conditioning course. This training was given by the Gemaire Company to provide advanced knowledge of their new green machines.
The products and technology covered the Nutone 23 SEER heat pumps and communication technology for reliability and comfort these machines provide.
Salisbury resident picked to blog during conference
Ruth Kinzey, president of The Kinzey Company in Salisbury, has been selected by the U.S. Chamber’s Business Civic Leadership Center to be one of its five official bloggers covering the 2009 Global Corporate Citizenship Conference in Washington on Oct. 1-2.
Kinzey will cover sessions that will appear on the Chamber’s blog and be sent via Twitter. Although the center has held this conference for 10 years, this will be the first year that it has tapped into social media to share content and ideas with the public.
Foutz named investigator for N.M. insurance company
Eric Foutz, a Salisbury native, has accepted a position as Senior Special Investigator for Farmer’s Insurance in New Mexico. He will be one of two investigators for the state.
Foutz has been employed by Farmer’s for the past two years as an auto claims manager for New Mexico. He has more than eight years of experiencei n the insurance industry and four years as a police officer for the cities of Lexington and Winston-Salem.
He is a 1992 graduate of Salisbury High School and a 1997 honor graduate of Pfeiffer University. He holds the Fraud Claims Law Specialist designation as well. Foutz lives with his wife and two sons in Rio Rancho, N.M. He is the son of Dan and Denise Foutz of Salisbury.
