After reading the text of the proposed “Resolution of Reconciliation,” I agree with members of the City Council who believe that more time is needed for review.

It is appropriate to acknowledge the murders that occurred in 1906 by the lawless mob as well as subsequent acts of racial terrorism. I could support some type of Equity Commission to assist in identifying administrative and legal barriers to equality but do not believe that it should be tasked to “oversee processes and procedures that eliminate identified inequities and disparities.” That is the job of the City Manager, his staff and the City Council.

I also believe that, if it is decided to publicly report on efforts to eliminate inequity, it would be more appropriate to have that happen around Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. He dedicated his life to social justice through non-violent means. That, to me, is better than commemorating a day (August 6, 1906) filled with hate and social injustice.
