MIAMI ó Miami quarterback Jacory Harris completed 20 of 25 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and the 20th-ranked Hurricanes put an emphatic end to a four-game losing streak against No. 14 Georgia Tech with a 33-17 victory Thursday night.
Miami (2-0, 2-0 ACC) matched its best league start since 2004, outgained Georgia Tech 454-228 and set up a Coastal Division showdown at Virginia Tech on Sept. 26.
Tech’s reigning ACC player of the year, Jonathan Dwyer, was slowed by a shoulder injury and finished with 7 yards on five carries.

INDIANAPOLIS ó Colts coach Jim Caldwell said receiver Anthony Gonzalez could miss up to two months after spraining ligaments in his right knee Sunday. Indy has signed former Philadelphia receiver Hank Baskett to take his place.
* PHILADELPHIA ó The Eagles will honor Randall Cunningham by adding him to the team’s honor roll at halftime of their game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
* HOUSTON ó Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson has been fined $25,000 by the team for the “pay me Rick” shoes he wore during Sunday’s game. The shoes targeted general manager Rick Smith.
BASEBALL
ATLANTA ó Brian McCann hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 7-3 for their first seven-game winning streak since 2006.
The Braves moved 10 games over .500 for the first time since May 16, 2007. Atlanta (78-68) is 41/2 games behind NL wild card-leading Colorado. New York (63-84) has fallen 21 games under .500 for the first time since Oct. 2, 2004.
* BOSTON ó Howie Kendrick homered and added an RBI blooper to break a ninth-inning tie as the Los Angeles Angels beat Boston 4-3.
* DETROIT ó Zack Greinke lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.14 with five scoreless innings in Kansas City’s 9-2 win over Detroit.
The Tigers’ division lead over Minnesota was cut to four games. Detroit starts a three-game series at the Metrodome today.

NEW YORK ó The lead negotiator and spokesman for the referees union said a lockout appears “imminent and unavoidable” following the latest breakdown in talks.
* PORTLAND, Ore. ó Juwan Howard signed a one-year contract with Portland. He averaged 4.1 points in 42 games with Denver and Charlotte last season.
* MIAMI ó The Heat will retire former guard Tim Hardaway’s No. 10 jersey in a ceremony Oct. 28, immediately prior to the season-opener against the Knicks.
GOLF
CONOVER ó R.W. Eaks admits he’s had a terrible year on the PGA Champions Tour.
The good news is he’s the two-time defending champion heading into the Greater Hickory Classic, which begins today on the nearby Rock Barn Golf and Spa course.
“I’ve absolutely played awful this year, there’s no bones about it,” Eaks said. “My confidence is probably at a low, but you never know. The juices may flow this week and good things will happen.”
Eaks has battled knee, back and muscle problems this year after winning four times and posting more than $2.4 million in earnings the last two seasons on the tour.
His only top-10 finish this year came in March, and he’s had to withdraw from three tournaments.

STATESVILLE ó Richard Petty Motorsports says director of competition Mark McArdle has left the team. Team president Rick Russell says the split is amicable, but McArdle had a heated argument with co-owner George Gillett in the garage Friday at Richmond and left the track for the rest of the weekend.

NEW YORK ó Roger Federer has been fined $1,500 for using a profanity while arguing with the umpire during the U.S. Open final.
