Area sports briefs: Rusher pulls out win in West loss

West Rowan’s girls tennis team lost 8-1 to Statesville in NPC action Monday.
Madison Rusher won 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) over Laurie Claire Davidson at No. 3 singles for the Falcons. Kate Ritchie dropped a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2.n Jayvee football
Brandon Ijames rushed for 176 yards to lead West Rowan’s jayvee football team to a 40-8 win against South Rowan. Trey Culberson returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and intercepted a pass for the Falcons (4-1, 1-0 NPC).
Mack Flanagan rushed for two TDs. Ijames and Marquise Drummond scored on runs. Connor Ward threw a TD pass to Quinton Phifer.
– Livingstone athletics
Livingstone’s volleyball team was swept by Fayetteville State. Lashaundra Ferguson led the Blue Bears (9-3, 5-3 CIAA) with five kills.n SAC football
The SAC named Mars Hill running back Jonas Randolph and Carson-Newman QB Alex Good as Co-Offensive Players of the Week.
Wingate safety Tylan Merkerson is the SAC Defensive Player of the Week. Carson-Newman kicker Carlos Lopez is the SAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
– College cross country
Western Carolina’s Olivia Jacobs (South Rowan) finished 34th in the 5K Winthrop Invitational with a time of 20:04.94.
– Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer finished 11th in the Lady Falcon Invitational hosted by Daytona State. Chelsea Demers paced Pfeiffer with rounds of 77-85ó162.
– Wonder named to Hall
A.L. Brown graduate Danny Bost is a member the 2009 Brevard Athletic Hall of Fame class and will be inducted in October.
Bost was part of Brevard’s Class of 1962 when it was a junior college. He excelled in baseball and cross country for the Tornados. He was a baseball standout at Catawba, graduating in 1964.
He is currently a scout for the Cincinnati Reds.
– GARS outing
Sixty-three GARS members played Monday. It was the fourth round and final round of the annual tournament at Warrior Golf Club.
The ‘A’ flight winner was Frank Masingo with a net of 65.30. The ‘B’ flight winner was Butch Grambow with a net of 66.15. The ‘C’ flight winner was Bob Gilland with a net of 66.15. The ‘D’ flight winner was Nelson McDaniel with a net of 63.66.
