NEW LONDON — Derrick Page sank two decisive free throws with 12.3 seconds left, and North Rowan won at North Stanly, 44-43,  in low-scoring Yadkin Valley Conference basketball action on Wednesday.

Eighth-ranked North Rowan was able to stop North Stanly’s final possession, forcing a turnover.

The Cavaliers  (16-2, 11-0), who haven’t lost since they fell to North Stanly in the Christmas tournament, won their ninth in a row.

North Rowan trailed 32-19 at halftime, but held North Stanly (9-8, 6-4) to 11 points in the second half.

North Stanly standout Bryson Childress made four 3-pointers in the second quarter and had 19 points at the break. North’s defense, led by Brevin Goodlett, held him to one point  in the second half.

The Cavaliers got 13 points from Goodlett, 12 from Dayjuwon Cooke and nine from Page.

North Rowan was able to turn the game around by outscoring the home team 16-5 in the third quarter.

Carson Lowder had eight of his 12 points in the second half for the Comets.

NR girls win

NEW LONDON — North Rowan’s girls took their third straight win on  Wednesday at North Stanly.

The Cavaliers shook off foul trouble for a 58-48  Yadkin Valley Conference victory.

“Our bench played well tonight on offense and defense,” North coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “Our intensity picked up a lot  on defense in the second half and second-chance baskets helped us pull away.”

Hannah Wilkerson (17), Jamya Daniels (13), Natavia Taborn (11) and Makiya McDaniel scored in double figures for North Rowan.

Wilkerson scored 11 in the fourth quarter.

Camille Shelton scored 16 to lead the Comets (2-12, 1-9).

Carson boys win

CHINA GROVE — Carson’s boys stayed in the thick of the North Piedmont Conference race with an impressive 89-61 win in a battle for second place against South Iredell on Wednesday.

“Probably our best all-round game,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We scored the ball really well, and made an awful lot of shots. And we got some big defensive efforts, especially from Mark Spry and Jake Harris.”

E.J. Clark had a monster game for the Cougars (9-9, 4-1), scoring 31 points. AJ Mauldin scored 21, Cole Perry had 16, and Spry scored 15.

Even with Javon Smith saddled with foul trouble, the Cougars rolled.

South Iredell got within eight in the third quarter and had some momentum, but then Carson heated up again.

“Except for that one game at Statesville, we’ve been on a pretty good roll since the Christmas tournament,” Coach Perry said. “And as bad as we lost at Statesville, it’s still just one loss in the standings. You have to win your home games to compete for one of the top spots, and this was a very big one for us to get.”

Ty Everhart scored 21 to lead the Vikings (10-7, 3-2).

Carson girls romp

CHINA GROVE — Carson’s girls, tied for third in the 3A rankings, will have to play the rest of the season without sophomore Carleigh Perry, who suffered her second ACL injury (different knee) last Friday.

“It’s heartbreaking for her, and it’s a blow to our team, but she’s tough, and if she can come back from one ACL, we know she can do it again,” Carson coach  Brooke Stouder said. “We’re her team and we’re going to be there for her through this.”

Stouder put Perry’s stats up on the chalkboard and challenged her teammates to find a way to duplicate them.

“No one person can replace the points, the rebounds, the charges taken, but together, as a group, we can try,” Stouder said. “We’ve got to make some adjustments. Some roles will shift. We weren’t very big, even with Carleigh, so we’ve got to fight even harder on the boards now.”

Nancy Gamewell played  a lot in Wednesday’s 62-29 North Piedmont Conference pounding of South Iredell.  Kary  Hales also played more than usual and was very productive with six points, six rebounds and three steals.

“Not bad for our 5-foot-3 post player,” Stouder said.

Colbie Perry scored 13, Ellie Wilhelm scored 11, and McKenzie Gadson had 12 points and five steals.

Hannah Isley moved up to the varsity and had five points and six rebounds.

“We made seven 3-pointers in the first half tonight and that took the pressure off,” Stouder said. “And we played well defensively, Without Carleigh on the boards, it’s going to be even more important for us to turn our pressing defense into easy offensive points.”

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s boys finally took control in the fourth quarter and beat North Iredell, 59-51, for a North Piedmont Conference victory on Wednesday.

Elton Hooper scored 20 for the Mustangs (9-9, 2-3), while Gavin Sprinkle had 18.

Blake Barzee scored 18 for the Raiders (4-14, 1-4).

East girls fall

GRANITE QUARRY —  East Rowan’s girls lost to North Iredell, 49-27, on Wednesday in North Piedmont Conference action.

North Iredell stayed tied for first place with Carson and Statesville at 4-1.

“They started to separate from us late in the second quarter,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We couldn’t figure out how to close the gap in the second half.”

Rachel LaLonde led North Iredell (15-2, 4-1) with 15 points.

Grace Eagle scored nine for the Mustangs (12-6, 1-4), and Mary Spry had six.

South boys win

MIDWAY — Jarron Hines scored 23 points and Logan Carter had 14  to lead South Rowan’s boys to a 68-53 Central Carolina Conference win at Oak Grove on Wednesday.

Oak Grove, which played a competitive game at South, had targeted this game as an opportunity for the first boys basketball win in school history and jumped out to an 11-0 lead.

South didn’t score for the first four minutes, but was able to fight back to a 20-all tie at halftime. Braxton Stanley and Carter got the Raiders untracked.

The third quarter proved decisive. South (3-14, 3-8) had a huge one, scoring 29 points to take a 14-point lead.

“We were playing without Brenden Finger who was sick, but we played a really good third quarter,” South coach Andre McCain said.

Hines made three 3-pointers during his 13-point third quarter.

Stanley scored seven for South. Braden Graham had six, and Andrew Jones added five.

Anthony Bowen scored 20 for Oak Grove (0-18, 0-13).  Max Hester had 12.

 

South girls win

MIDWAY — South Rowan’s girls beat Oak Grove on the road on Wednesday.

The Raiders took a 48-34 Central Carolina Conference victory behind 30 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals by Janiya Downs.

Bethany Rymer scored six for South (11-7, 10-2). Lauren Shell had four points and six rebounds.

Gillian Hinkle scored nine for the Grizzlies (5-14, 2-11).

South had a 29-14 lead at halftime. Downs scored 14 points in the second quarter.

West girls fall

STATESVILLE — In a game with some wild momentum swings, West Rowan’s girls lost at Statesville, 52-38, on Wednesday.

West Rowan got off to a good start, taking advantage of cold Statesville shooting to lead 18-7 after the first quarter.

Statesville picked up its defensive pressure and cut the Falcons’ lead to 28-21 at halftime.

West’s lead after three quarters was 34-32.

Then the fourth quarter belonged to the Greyhounds. Statesville took a 36-34 lead with six minutes left to play and finished the game on a 20-4 run.

Statesville (14-3, 4-1) stayed tied for first in the NPC with Carson and North Iredell.

Tyaysia Sharpe led the Greyhounds with 17 points. Aasia McNeill and Danasia Gray scored 11 each.

Junior Abigail Wilson scored 13 for West and surpassed Khaila Hall to move into eighth place on the school’s career scoring list with 1,354 points.

Cindy Connolly added eight points, but the Falcons lost their third in a row. Taylor Poole scored six.

The 38 points were the fewest West has scored in a game this season. The previous low was 48 against North Iredell.

West boys lose road game

STATESVILLE — Statesville’s Greyhounds had little difficulty taking care of business at home and rolled to a 77-54 North Piedmont Conference win against West Rowan on Wednesday.

Statesville (9-8, 5-0) remained undefeated in the NPC and one game up on Carson in the league standings.

Jeremiah Mott scored 19 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to pace the Greyhounds.

Statesville led 40-28 at halftime.

West (2-16, 0-5) cut Statesville’s lead to 10 in the third quarter, but an 11-2 spree put the game away for the Greyhounds.

West got 18 points from Bryson Moss and 14 from Payne Stolsworth, who made two 3-pointers.

 

Salisbury girls win

SALISBURY — Anayia Fulson had 16 points and six rebounds and Bryanna Troutman had 14 points, six rebounds and four steals as Salisbury beat Central Davidson, 51-19, for a Central Carolina Conference win on Wednesday.

It was a matchup of the CCC’s top and bottom teams, but the first-place Hornets (15-2, 11-1) started slowly.

Sixth-ranked Salisbury trailed early and led at halftime, 19-11.

Eventually, the Hornets pulled away from the Spartans (2-14, 1-11) for their sixth straight victory and stayed a game ahead of South Rowan in the standings.

Chantal Robinson had six points and five steals for the Hornets.

Fulson, a junior, raised her career total to 838 points.

Troutman was honored for grabbing 1,000 rebounds for the program. She’s also sixth all-time in scoring for the Hornets with 1,360 points.  Shanequa “Bubbles” Phifer is fifth with 1,361.
