Area sports briefs: Falcons, Cougars get tennis wins

West Rowan’s girls tennis team beat NPC rival South Rowan 8-1 on Thursday.
Kate Ritchie, Madison Rusher, Ellen Watts, Maggie Daniel and Mary Tyler March won in singles for West Rowan.
Ritchie-Sarah Teel, Rusher-Watts and Rebecca Waggoner-Mary Beth Stanley won in doubles.
Leslie Freeze won at No. 1 singles for South.
* Carson won 8-1 against South Rowan in NPC action Wednesday.
Kelly Dulkoski, Carol Brown, Hannah Shinn, Elizabeth Hefner, Haylee Hepler and Julie Tonnesen won in singles for the third-place Cougars.
Hepler-Hefner and Harley Graham-Vanessa Evans were doubles winners.
Freeze-Andrea Lambert picked up a doubles victory for South.
* Carson won 6-3 against North Iredell on Tuesday afternoon.Dulkoski, Brown, Shinn, and Hefner won in singles for the Cougars. Dulkoski-Brown and Shinn-Jada Holloway prevailed in doubles.
– Prep golf
Salisbury’s girls golf team remained undefeated after playing matches Wednesday and Thursday.
The Hornets shot 133 on Wednesday at Warrior to top Southwestern Randolph (149), East Davidson (151) and Central Davidson (154).
Madison Kennedy shot 36 to lead Salisbury. Catherine Parks (46), Amber Lyerly (51) and Brooke Smith (56) were the other Hornets competing.
Salisbury participated with NPC teams Thursday in a match at Rolling Hills.
Kennedy and Lyerly shot 43s. Parks shot 50 and Smith had a 58.
Lily Yatawara, who felt sick during a match Tuesday in Mooresville, was out Wednesday and Thursday.
“These girls have been playing a lot of golf, and fatigue is starting to set in,” coach Dale Snyder said. “The schedule lightens up here for us before we go to regionals. Hopefully, we’ll be back to full strength with Lily back soon.”
– Jayvee football
A.L. Brown defeated Central Cabarrus 42-0 on Thursday.
The Wonders (5-0, 2-0 SPC) rushed 21 times for 167 yards and were 5-for-5 passing for 117 yards.
Demetrius Jackson scored two touchdowns, including a 53-yard run. QB Damien Washington ran for two scores, including a 63-yard scamper. Keenan Medley had a 14-yard TD run.DB Kalif Phillips scored on a 70-yard fumble return.
– Prep volleyball
Statesville topped East Rowan 3-0 in NPC play Thursday.
* West Iredell beat North Iredell 3-2 to open a two-game lead in the league race.
– College volleyball
Livingstone’s volleyball team was swept at home in a CIAA match against Shaw.With the loss, the Blue Bears fell to 9-4 overall, 4-4 in the CIAA and 0-3 in the Western Division.
Livingstone will be back in action Sunday when it travels to Chowan.
– North Hills sports
The North Hills varsity volleyball team defeated the Cabarrus Stallions on Tuesday.
* North Hills’ middle school soccer team defeated Christian Family 5-0 on Thursday.
Jay Wood had a hat trick, and Zack Sukkasem scored twice. Allison Voncannon and Logan Miller registered assists.
Solid defensive play from Brandon Lottes, Alden Roseman, Ashley Wood, and Colin Lewis contributed to the shutout. Sam Reeder, Wood, and Sukkasem split time in goal and combined for eight saves.
The Eagles play at Statesville Montessori today.
– Salisbury Academy
Samantha Wright ran a time of 17:33 and led the Salisbury Academy girls cross country team during a meet in Statesville. Amery Barton was second in 19:24.
* Salisbury Academy’s soccer team beat Hickory Christian 2-0. Ian Lins scored a goal and was a defensive standout.
– Eighth-grade football
West Rowan’s eighth-grade football team won 30-14 against Southeast Middle.
Michael Pinkston scored touchdowns on runs of 2, 3 and 5 yards.
Keyows Weeks had an 8-yard TD run, Malik Crudup forced a safety and Daisean Reddick had a pair of conversion runs. West’s offensive line of Trey Brawley, Jacob Kennedy, Zeke Blackwood, Jesse Moore, Teoz Mauney and Nick Collins had a good game.
Tyler Kennedy had two interceptions, and Jacob Steele recovered a fumble.
Southeast’s Austin McNeil threw TD passes of 70 and 30 yards to Caleb Cranfield, and Najee Tucker had a two-point conversion.
Southeast dropped to 2-2. West (4-0) plays at North on Wednesday.
– Middle school softball
Jaysa Jordan hit a towering home run in Erwin’s 25-7 softball win against West Rowan on Tuesday.
Katie Kepley and Hayley Hepburn had four hits each for the Eagles (27-1). Josie McNeely, Kennedy Lambert and Kaleigh Troutman had three apiece. Jordan, Mariah Morgan and Alisha Beam contributed two apiece for Erwin, which pounded out 27 hits.
Kepley was the winning pitcher.
– Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies competed in their annual two-day Judy Cristman Fall Club Championship.
Becky Isenhour won the championship flight. Beth Calhoun was second, followed by Susan Morris.
Ruth Bowles won the first flight, with second going to Cindy Carmazzi and third going to Carolynn Ries.
Joy Maughmer won the second flight, with second going to Karla Swanson and third going to Sharon Deal.
– College baseball
Appalachian State coach Chris Pollard released the school’s 2010 baseball schedule. The Mountaineers open Feb. 19 against Presbyterian in the Marriott Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.
– Basketball training
ABC Youth Development basketball skill training will be held at KidsSports on Sundays from 3-5 p.m. beginning this Sunday.The program is open to boys and girls ages 8-up and costs $5 per session.

East Rowan Little League is electing new board members. Open positions are Vice President of Baseball, Safety and Security, Media, Secretary and Concessions.

The third annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis golf tournament will be held at Corbin Hills on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m.
