Saturday’s college roundup for area players …
North Carolina Central is 0-5 after losing 23-17 in double overtime to rival North Carolina A&T on Saturday in Greensboro.
It was the second double-OT loss in a matter of weeks for the luckless Eagles.
N.C. Central freshman kicker Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury) temporarily staved off defeat with a clutch kick late in regulation, but his attempt for a game-winning field goal in the first OT was blocked.
N.C. Central trailed 17-0, but Cardelle was part of a rally to 17-17. He made two PATS and knocked through a 20-yard field goal with 2:36 left in regulation to force overtime.
Cardelle is the Eagles’ leading scorer with 21 points. He’s 4-for-10 on field goals and 9-for-9 on PATS.
N.C. Central goes to Appalachian State this Saturday.
n Senior defensive end Scotty Robinson (Salisbury) wasn’t credited with a single tackle in East Carolina’s 21-17 win against Marshall, but he had back-to-back QB hurries late in the first half that helped the Pirates get to the locker room with a 14-7 lead.
n Wake Forest sophomore defensive end Tristan Dorty (West Rowan) was in on three tackles in the Deacons’ 30-24 win against N.C. State.
n Appalachian State tackle Anthony Williams (NW Cabarrus) was in on three stops in a 30-27 overtime win against The Citadel.
n ASU used true freshman Jamill Lott (A.L. Brown) as a nickel back on defense.
n Notre Dame corner Raeshon McNeil (Davie) made one tackle in a 37-30 overtime victory against Washington.
n Wingate’s Phillip Hilliard (Salisbury) averaged 32.8 yards on six punts in a 28-12 win against Brevard. Hilliard’s first punt for 43 yards was his longest.
Hilliard did get some hang-time. Brevard had negative punt-return yardage for the game.
n Brevard senior ReShaun Parks (Davie), a former East-West All-Star, made a tackle on a kickoff for the Tornados.
n Redshirt freshman Derek Davis (South Rowan) made a fourth-quarter tackle for UNC Pembroke in a 30-3 win against Webber International.
n Jamey Small (East) made a 9-yard reception in Catawba’s 40-21 loss to Newberry. It was his second catch of the season and eighth of his career.
n Besides blocking a punt that set up a Catawba touchdown, safety Jaspen Gray (Davie) made eight tackles, broke up a pass and had a QB hurry.
n Linebacker Julian Samolu (West) made seven tackles for Catawba, third-highest total on the team.
n Former Catawba quarterback Howard Williamson scored a TD for Elizabeth City State in a 23-10 loss against Virginia State.
n Other local players seeing action on Saturday included Averett safety Justin McCauley (A.L. Brown), Lenoir-Rhyne lineman Ben Kuhn (Davie) and Wingate’s Austin Lowe (West) and Josh Patch (East) and Livingstone QB/punter Bryan Aycoth (West).
McCauley’s only tackle in a 28-17 win against Greensboro was erased by a flag.
