High school sports: Wrestling regionals, track championships

Rowan wrestlers did very well in regional action on Friday and Saturday.

Top-four finishers in regionals advance to the state tournament in Greensboro.

In the 2A Midwest Regional held at Lexington,  South Rowan qualified four wrestlers for state competition.

South’s Jacob Cox (35-1) went 4-0 with two pins and a technical fall and won the 113 final with a 9-3 decision.

South’s Logan Lambert (28-1) had a first-round bye and went 3-0 with two pins. He won the regional championship at 138 with a 14-2 major decision.

South’s Michael Sloop (29-5) went 5-1 in the regional and finished third at 182. South’s Logan Perry (31-14) went 3-2 and placed fourth at 145.

As a team, South finished eighth in the regional.

Salisbury finished ninth in the regional and qualified three wrestlers for the state tournament.

Javon White (113), Michael Lowry (132) and Kevion Chunn (heavyweight) all placed third.

White (43-12) went 4-1. Lowry (49-9) went 5-1 in the regional.  Chunn (46-8) went 4-1.

In the 3A Midwest Regional at Piedmont, East Rowan placed  sixth, with A.L. Brown seventh, West Rowan ninth, and Carson 11th.

East qualified four wrestlers for the state tournament.

East’s Oren Bost (51-3) went 4-0 and was regional champ at 145. He took a 10-4 decision in the final.

Tayron Frost (29-9) was runner-up at 170. He went 3-1 in the regional. Stephen Deutsch (41-7) was runner-up at 160. He was 3-1 in the regional.

Nate Burrage (46-11) placed third at 113. He was 4-1 in the regional.

• West Rowan’s Baiden Suddarth was runner-up at 195. Suddarth (34-8) was 3-1 in the regional.

• Carson’s Josh Vega (32-8) was runner-up at 113. Vega had a first-round  bye and won twice before losing 4-3 in the final.

• A.L. Brown had two regional champions, with Jaquan Russell (40-8) going 4-0 in the regional at 152.  He won a 9-5 decision in the final.

A.L. Brown’s Mason Ingram (47-6) went 4-0 at 182 and won an 11-3 major decision in the final.

In the 4A Midwest Regional hosted by Davie County, the War Eagles qualified eight wrestlers for the state tournament.

Davie was second in the team scoring behind Northwest Guilford.

Davie’s Jesus Olmedo was regional champ at 220.

Bill Trader was second at 126. Isaac Webb was second at 152. Matthew King was runner-up at 182. Andy Flores placed second at heavyweight.

JT Richards took third at 113.

Josh Chaffin placed fourth at  132, while Jack Jarvis was fourth at 145.

Track championships

Indoor track state championships were held at Winston-Salem on Friday and Saturday.

A.L. Brown’s boys placed eighth in 3A with 22 points.

Joshua Parks placed second in the 55 meter hurdles with a PR of 7.48 seconds.

The versatile Parks also was fourth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

Parks teamed with Jalen Neal, Addonance Brown and Tanner Roth on a 4×400 relay team that took fourth.

Neal ran a PR 35.50 for fifth place in the 300.

Carson wheelchair athlete Will Fuller took first places in dashe and throwing events.

Carson’s Teolyn Woodruff was 10th in the shot put with an effort of 42-5.

West Rowan’s Jalen Houston was third, right behind Parks, in the 55 meter hurdles. Houston was clocked in 7.57.

In the 1A/2A meet, South Rowan’s Madison Lowery was ninth in the 1600 in 5:41.05.

SR freshman Bethany Rymer was 14th in the 1600 and 15th in the 1000.
