PALM CITY, Fla. – In the  UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate  at Osprey Creek, UNC Greensboro men’s golf team  tied its lowest 18-hole score against par in program history on Monday, shooting 15-under 273.

The Spartans are in first place, two strokes ahead of Mercer entering today’s final round.

Sophomore Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) has shot 68-69  for second place. Lyerly  birdied three holes on Monday and eagled the par-five No. 8 hole.

ST. AUGUSTINE’S, Fla. —  Catawba returned to action for its first spring tournament on Monday at the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament.

The second of three rounds was called due to darkness on Monday with all teams still on the course. The second round will resume today, with the third round to follow.

In the River Run Intercollegiate held in Davidson,  James Madison’s Walker Cress (Concord) finished 3-under for sixth place.

Richmond’s Michael Childress (Cannon School) has shot 72-69 — 141 and is 3-under after two rounds of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in Alabama.

College football

Catawba released its 2019 football schedule.

The slate  features five home games and a first-ever meeting with UVA-Wise, the newest member of the South Atlantic Conference.

College baseball

Brevard third baseman Holden Lanier (North Rowan) went 5-for-16 in the Tornados’ first four games.

In a 4-2 win against USC Sumter, John Owen (East Rowan) pitched five innings for the win,

Owen struck out five with no walks and no earned runs. Chandler Blackwelder (East Rowan) went 3-for-3.

Blackwelder is 6-for-11 in four games.

College softball

Pfeiffer senior softball player Vada Blue Sherrill has been named to the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the of the Year Watch List.

Sherrill batted .508 in 2018 and went  56-for-56 on stolen bases. In 42 games, she clubbed 16 home runs, drove in 69 and scored 64 times, all  program records.

Pfeiffer head softball coach Monte Sherrill has been named the 2019 winner of the Lou Presutti Award.

  Sherrill is  a member of the North Carolina Softball Association Hall of Fame and the Pfeiffer University Sports Hall of Fame.  Sherrill was a four-year baseball player for the Falcons under legendary coach Joe Ferebee from 1984-1987.

The Lou Presutti Award is named after Louis A. Presutti, founder of the Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Signings, commits

West Rowan quarterback Payne Stolsworth has committed to N.C. Wesleyan.

Stolsworth was all-county in football three times.

He finished his career fourth on the county’s all-time passing yardage list with 6,085. He’s second in county history with 68 TD passes.

East Rowan soccer standout Landon Ketchie has committed to Piedmont College in Georgia.

The center back was an all-region player as a senior and was all-county as a junior and senior.

Pro football

Former Catawba receiver Sam Mobley made the roster of the Salt Lake City Stallions in the new Alliance of American Football (AAF).

   

Mid. school girls

Corriher-Lipe won against Erwin, 24-11.

Addie Plott scored 11 for the Yellow Jackets, while Amber Aloton had nine.

Allie Martin scored seven for the Eagles.

Mid. school boys

Knox’s boys won against Erwin, 64-22.

Yohance Connor scored 28 points and had seven steals to lead the Trojans, who bounced back from a loss to Mooresville.

Da’Shawn Brown had 14 points, 13 steals and five assists.

Tyvonta Rushmeyer scored 10 points, and Tim Davis III added four.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys basketball team defeated  Statesville Montessori in overtime, 37-36, to win the WCCAA Conference Championship.

Jaiden Colbert hit a turnaround jumper to put the Jaguars up one with 12 seconds left. Then he  blocked a  shot to seal the victory.

The Jaguars (20-0) were led by Deuce Walker with 12 points and Colbert with 11 points. Damian Brandon scored six, while Hank Webb had five.

Brandon and  Walker made the all-conference team. Colbert was the   WCCAA MVP.

The Salisbury Academy varsity girls basketball team finished the season with a win in the consolation game of the WCCAA Conference Tournament on Saturday at Salisbury Academy.

Salisbury Academy defeated Tri-City Christian School, 35-19.

Gigi Nagy led SA with 13 points. Abbey Lawson had 10 points, and Izzy Banish scored six.

Nagy and Maggie Antosek were named to the all-conference team.

The Salisbury Academy jayvee girls basketball team won the WCCAA conference championship by beating St. Stephens Lutheran School, 36-6.

Leading scorers were Kennedi Fisher with 12 points, Lanie Humble with 10 points, and Ava Morris with  six.

Fisher and Humble were named to the all-conference team. Caroline Snow was named conference MVP.

The Salisbury Academy jayvee boys basketball team won the WCCAA conference championship by defeating Tabernacle Christian School, 51-13.

Leading scorers for the Jaguars were Jacob Mills with 21 points, Warren Fesperman with 10 points, and John McCoy with seven.

Abdul Eliwa and Avery Arnez were named to the all-conference team. Mills was named conference MVP.

Jayvee basketball

Carson’s jayvee girls won against Statesville on Friday, 37-21.

Makayla Johnson scored 14, Camden Corley had 11, and Iyonna Parker had 10 for the Cougars.  Sophie Hill and Maddie Morgan were defensive standouts.

Alaya Summers scored 10 for Greyhounds.
