HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Catawba’s men’s basketball team romped at Coker on Wednesday,  94-69, in South Atlantic Conference action.

The Indians, who led by 22 points at halftime, put five men in double figures.

Catawba (18-5, 11-4) moved into a tie for second place  in the SAC with Lincoln Memorial.

Jameel Taylor scored 19 for Catawba. Marcell Haskett and Jordan McElveen scored 17 each. Devin Cooper had 14, and Daquan Lilly contributed 10.

“Four guys shot better than 50 percent,” Catawba coach Rob Perron said. “And Jeremy (McLaughlin) was really good tonight.”

McLaughlin had nine rebounds and two blocks.

McElveen, a transfer from Davis & Elkins, surpassed 1,000 career points.

Catawba shot 54.3 percent as a team for the game, including 12-for-24 from the 3-point line.

Marquis Green led the   last-place Cobras (3-20, 1-15) with 17 points.

Carson is home on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Carson-Newman.

Catawba women

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Catawba’s women’s basketball didn’t play stellar offensively, but they picked up a 62-43 South Atlantic Conference win at Coker on Wednesday.

“We played good  defense,” Catawba coach Terrence Baxter said. “Great team win on the road.”

Taisha DeShazo had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Indians. Shemya Stanback grabbed 10 rebounds. Keyotta Garris made all five of her field-goal tries. Madi Hallman made three 3-pointers and scored 12.

Catawba (12-10, 7-8) led at the half, 33-22.

Catawba shot an ordinary 35.5 percent and was only 6-for-30 on 3-pointers.

Catawba had a 23-15 advantage in the turnover battle. Coker shot 33 percent and made just two 3-pointers.

Catawba’s Mercedes Wampler missed the game with a foot injury.

Coker (5-19, 4-12) got 11 points from Hayley Kropp.

Women’s hoops

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had 12 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes  in UNC Pembroke’s 68-48 win against Augusta on Wednesday.

Men’s hoops

GREENSBORO — Pfeiffer University put five players in double figures, including 44 points from senior Kyle Riddley, as the visiting Falcons bolted past Greensboro College in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night.

Riddley continued his torrid scoring pace, going 13-of-19 from the field and  16-of-21 from the free throw line.  He also had  12 rebounds and five assists.

Josiah Avington   knocked down six three-pointers and scored 21 for the Falcons (12-12).

  

South boys fall

LANDIS — South Rowan’s boys basketball team   made  a good Senior Night effort before losing to Central Davidson on Wednesday, 53-48.

South’s seniors include Jarron Hines, Andrew Jones, Terrence Fullard and Elijah Gaskin.

Jones scored 11 against Central. Logan Carter had 10, and Hines scored nine.

Barrett Thompson had seven points, while Brenden Finger scored six.

Central  got 17 points from Jacob Myers, 11 from Jensen Leonard and 10 from Steling Charles Jr.

Whether South (4-19, 4-13) will finish in the top eight and qualify for the CCC tourney is still up in the air.

East Davidson is still behind South in the battle for eighth place, but plays winless Oak Grove on Friday and could grab its fourth league win.

College baseball

Catawba first baseman Hunter Shepherd was named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Catawba right-hander Riley Myers was named Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 4-10.

Shepherd, a junior from Salisbury who was homeschooled,  led the Indians to a 6-0 record with wins over Palm Beach Atlantic, Mount Olive, West Virginia State and Mars Hill. He batted .450 with 10 RBIs, two home runs, three doubles and 11 runs scored.

Myers, a junior who starred at Salisbury High,   was 2-0. He went eight innings against Palm Beach Atlantic, allowing one run on five hits with nine punch-outs. Myers then threw six scoreless innings versus Mars Hill. He gave up just five hits and had six strikeouts in the win.

Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 65.62 was Ted Weant.

Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 66.84 was Mike Sides.

Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 67.95 was John Cress.

Weant had low gross score with a 76, while Sides won low net.

Carson sprinter Grace Leget has signed with Catawba.

High school football

Daniel Crosby will be the new Carson head football coach.

Crosby said via Twitter on Tuesday: “I am honored and humbled to announce that I will be the head football coach at Carson High School. Go COUGARS!”

Crosby is a Catawba graduate and was a standout athlete at South Rowan in football and baseball.

He’s currently teaching health/PE and weight lifting at Cox Mill. He’s been part of the football coaching staff at Cox Mill and also coaches track and field.

Prior to his stint at Cox Mill, Crosby was defensive coordinator at Central Cabarrus. A story on Crosby is upcoming.

Terry Berryman, 72, a fixture for A.L. Brown football as the Wonders’ video man for many years, passed away on Tuesday.

College wrestling

GREENSBORO – The 10th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team  got a pin from Brandon Sloop (Carson) in a 33-12 win against Greensboro on Wednesday in the final regular season dual meet for both teams.
