A.L. Brown-Mt. Pleasant preview
Published 12:00 am Thursday, October 15, 2009
nTime: 7:30 p.m.
nRecords: A.L. Brown 6-1, 3-0 SPC; Mt. Pleasant 2-5, 1-2 SPC
nSeries: Wonders lead 2-0
nLast meeting: Brown won 21-0 in 2006
nLast week: A.L. Brown cruised past Cox Mill 61-7; Mount Pleasant played twice last week, nipping Cox Mill on Tuesday and losing 17-14 on Friday to Hickory Ridge, which remains unbeaten in the SPC. Two games in four days is tough duty, and the sore Tigers will likely be more battered at the end of tonight’s game.
nNext week: A.L. Brown is home against Hickory Ridge; Mount Pleasant is at Concord
nGame notes: Mount Pleasant moved up to the SPC two years too late. They were 14-1 in 2007.
The Wonders have outscored SPC foes 140-21 so far, and things shouldn’t change tonight. Mount Pleasant lost 54-0 to Monroe, 35-7 to Albemarle and 28-0 to Northwest Cabarrus, so it’s been overwhelmed by the good teams on its schedule. Brown, obviously, is good.
Mt. Pleasant’s narrow 26-22 victory over Cox Mill is an indication it could be a long night for the Tigers. Brown got an interception from Ryan Blackmon last week in a 54-point rout of Cox Mill. The defense continues to create turnovers.
The Wonders have dealt with the flu bug lately, but they still look like a team that can roll in the playoffs. Big offensive tackle Charles Mance is one of the Wonders who was sick, but he’s healthier now.
The Wonders haven’t lost when QB Martel Campbell has been available, and punishing junior tailback Travis “Train” Riley has 20 TDs.
Brown has clinched its 32nd consecutive winning season and looks like a great bet for the SPC title. The Wonders’ game at NW Cabarrus on Oct. 30 looks like the serious test. รณ Mike London
