Area Sports Briefs: Catawba’s Ketchie pitches complete game

SALISBURY — Lefty Bryan Ketchie turned in an old-school performance on the mound for Catawba’s baseball team (11-1) at Newman Park on Saturday.

Ketchie, who starred for West Rowan High and the Rowan County American Legion team, threw 106 pitches, including 79 strikes in a 7-1 win against Shippensburg.

Catawba pounded 15 hits. Heath Mitchem (Carson) went 3-for-5, while Henderson Lentz (North Rowan), Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan), Hunter Shepherd (Homeschool Stallions), Joe Butts and Lee Poteat (West Rowan) added two hits each.

Jackson Raper extending his hitting streak to 12 games.

Ike Freeman (East Rowan) went 2-for-4 in UNC’s 8-3 win against Xavier on Saturday.

Austin Love (West Rowan) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Tar Heels.

Women’s lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE —  Mount Olive pulled away in the second half to record a 17-8 victory over Catawba in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the McDonald Complex.

Katie Barth   scored three goals to pace Catawba (0-1).

Catawba will host North Greenville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Basketball tourneys

Salisbury’s teams will be home for Central Carolina Conference Tournament first-round action on Monday.

The top-seeded Salisbury girls host Thomasville.

Salisbury’s third-seeded boys host West Davidson.

South Rowan’s fourth-seeded girls play at West Davidson on Monday in the CCC tournament, while South’s eighth-seeded boys play at top-seeded North Davidson.

North Davidson hosts the semifinals and championship games.

North Rowan’s third-seeded girls will be home at 6 p.m. for Yadkin Valley Conference first-round  tournament action on Monday.

North Rowan’s boys will be the top seed for the boys side of the tournament.

In the North Piedmont Conference, both first-round girls games will be played at Statesville on Monday.

Fourth-seeded West Rowan plays fifth-seeded East Rowan in the 6 p.m. game, with the Statesville vs. South Iredell game at 7:30 p.m.

The boys teams for East Rowan and North Iredell won’t be competing in the NPC tournament after fighting marred Friday’s game in Olin.

That leaves four teams. West Rowan will play Statesville, while South Iredell takes on Carson in semifinal action.

Statesville is the host for the semifinals and finals.

A.L. Brown’s girls will be home Monday for a first-round South Piedmont Conference tourney game against Robinson.

Central Cabarrus’ girls are the top seed for the tournament.

A.L. Brown’s boys have a first-round bye.

Cox Mill is the host for the tournament semifinals and championship games.
