SPARTANBURG, S.C. ó Armanti Edwards threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns to help Appalachian State rally for a 44-34 victory over Wofford on Saturday.
Edwards was 27 of 34 and threw scoring passes of 27 and 57 yards to Brian Quick, and the Mountaineers (4-2, 3-0 Southern Conference) scored the final 24 points for their 15th consecutive conference victory.
Wofford (1-5, 0-3) took a 34-20 lead on Austin Palmer’s 2-yard run with 12:22 left in the third quarter, but Derek Moore cut the lead to 34-27 on a 48-yard run with 6:16 remaining in the third quarter.
The Mountaineers cut the lead to 34-30 before Moore, who had 25 carries for 180 yards, scored on a 1-yard run for a 37-34 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Edwards’ 57-yard pass to Quick provided the winning margin with 6:48 remaining.
Western Carolina 14, Citadel 10
CULLOWHEE ó Dion Wilson ran for two touchdowns in the second half and Western Carolina beat Citadel 14-10.
Wilson scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter as the Catamounts (1-5, 1-3 Southern Conference) pulled to within 10-7, then scored the game-winner early in the fourth on a 5-yard run.
The Bulldogs (2-4, 0-3) missed two field goals in the second half and turned the ball over on downs twice in the fourth quarter.
Virginia 20, Maryland 9
COLLEGE PARK, Md. ó Virginia defensive end Nate Collins scored on a 32-yard interception return to help the Cavaliers beat Maryland 20-9 in a cold, steady rain.
It was the third straight victory for Virginia (3-3, 2-0 ACC). The Cavaliers trailed 9-3 late in the third quarter before scoring 10 points in a 19-second span.
Liberty 58, Coastal Carolina 13
LYNCHBURG, Va. ó Aldreakis Allen ran for three touchdowns and Liberty routed Coastal Carolina 58-13 on Saturday.
It was the 12th straight Big South Conference win for the Flames. The Chanticleers (3-3, 1-1), got their only touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Jamie Childers to Akeem Wesley with 42 seconds remaining.
N.C. Central 52, Central Methodist 7
DURHAM ó Michael Johnson threw two touchdown passes and North Carolina Central beat Central Methodist 52-7.
Johnson went 15-for-20 for 218 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Johnson and a 49-yarder to Geovonie Irvine. Andrew Johnson caught five passes for 106 yards.
Dayton 17, Davidson 0
DAYTON, Ohio ó Steve Valentino threw for one touchdown and ran for another, leading Dayton to a 17-0 win against Davidson on Saturday.Valentino was 10-for-18 passing with 145 yards and an interception for the Flyers (5-1, 3-0 Pioneer League). The Flyers, who increased their record in the all-time series to 7-1, capitalized on four turnovers by the Wildcats (2-4, 2-2) in the game.
Gardner-Webb 27, Charleston Southern 20
BOILING SPRINGS ó Patrick Hall scored on a 16-yard run with 22 seconds left to lift Gardner-Webb to a 27-20 win over Charleston Souther.West Virginia 24, Marshall 7
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ó Noel Devine rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, freshman Geno Smith threw a scoring pass after Jarrett Brown went down early with an injury and West Virginia beat Marshall 24-7.
West Virginia (5-1) overcame its first halftime deficit of the season to improve to 9-0 against Marshall (4-3).
