WELCOME — South Rowan’s boys basketball team ended its season with an 85-66 loss to North Davidson in the first round of the Central Carolina Conference Tournament.

Eighth-seeded South finished 4-21. Top-seeded North Davidson is 21-4.

Andrew Jones scored a career-high 20   on Monday in his final game to lead the Raiders. Jarron Hines had 17, and Brenden Finger scored 15.

Themus Fulks led the Black Knights with 34.

South girls fall

    TYRO — West Davidson held Janiya Downs to 17 points and 11 rebounds and beat South Rowan, 62-47 in a first-round game in the Central Carolina Conference Tournament on Monday.

West Davidson beat South for the third time this season. Haley Lowe scored 25 for the fourth-seeded Green Dragons (17-7). Karlie Cook had 14, and Sarah Rabon scored 11.

Fifth-seeded South (13-12) was led in scoring by Bethany Rymer’s 18 points.

West Davidson plays Salisbury in a semifinal game on Wednesday at North Davidson.

Wonder girls

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown’s third-seeded girls beat sixth-seeded Robinson, 57-38, on Monday in a first-round game in the South Piedmont Conference Tournament.

Jala Campbell paced the Wonders (7-17) with 19 points. Kaylee Yow had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Next for the Wonders is a 6 p.m. game against No. 2 seed Cox Mill at Cox Mill.

CCC girls

THOMASVILLE — Amarah Owens hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift sixth-seeded Lexington to a 51-49 win against third-seeded East Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference first-round game on Monday.

Mikenzie Harvin scored 17, and Danasia Bray had 14 for the Yellow Jackets.

WALLBURG — Second-seeded Ledford took a 57-47 win against seventh-seeded North Davidson on Monday.

Courtney McMillan scored 17 for the Black Knights, while Ashley Davis scored 16.

Lyrik Thorne poured in 36 for the Panthers. Ashlyn Roark had 10.

CPC boys

KERNERSVILLE — Third-seeded East Forsyth nipped sixth-seeded Reagan in a first-round Central Piedmont Conference game on Monday, 57-56.

Khaliq McCummings made two  free throws with two seconds left to give East Forsyth the win.

Savon Brintley led the Eagles (15-8) with 20 points.

Jalen Deathrage scored 17 for the Raiders (9-13).

College softball

Former West Rowan softball standout Hunter Gibbons tied the Western Carolina record for career homers on Saturday.

Gibbons blasted her 29th homer for the Catamounts in a game against Jacksonville State.

It was the first homer of the season for Gibbons, who hit eight as a freshman, nine as a sophomore and 11 as a junior.

She surpassed 100 career RBIs as a junior.

Gibbons was the Post’s Rowan County Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015.

College track & field

Charlotte’s Zach Marchinko (Carson) placed sixth in the Conference USA meet in the 5000 meters.

Marchinko’s PR of  14:36.87 ranked as the fifth-fastest time in 49ers history.

Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge) made the all-conference team, along with Marchinko.

Women’s basketball

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) and Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) scored 13 points each for UNC Pembroke in Monday’s 62-54 loss to Young Harris.

HS track & field

South Rowan runner Madison Lowery has signed with Catawba.

She’ll compete in cross country and track and field  for the Indians.

Lowery was the Post’s Female Runner of the Year for the 2017 cross country season.

She’s the reigning county champion in outdoor track in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

Carson’s 113-pounder Josh Vega, 3A state runner-up, has been chosen for the North Carolina all-star team that will compete against their South Carolina counterparts on March 1-2.
