Letter: Rowan’s band kids are pretty cool

On Saturday, I able to assist at the tryouts for Rowan-Salisbury Schools 2019 All-County Band. The tryouts were held at East Rowan High School.
My job was simple. I was to chaperone the warm-up area and make sure the conglomeration of teenage maestros behaved. I did not want to let down the county’s band directors or the East Rowan band parents, who were obviously desperate to pick me for such an important task.
The lights were dim. The smell of body spray, lip gloss and valve oil permeated the practice area. These teenagers were fueled by Cheerwine and Krispy Kreme, but I was up to the task.
They arrived early, unpacked their instruments and started warming up. The resulting bursts of sound captured and kept my attention. These kids were pretty good.
All were polished professionals. They weren’t far away from their phones, taking meme breaks and sending “snaps” to whoever and wherever.
As I listened, there was no talk of political scandal or Super Bowl halftime disappointment. There, amongst the glow of tablets and cell phones, was the energetic optimism of youth.
The sounds were as diverse as ones creating them.
Oh, I almost forgot. Back to the chaperoning. Here was the breakdown: four fist bumps, a couple of handshakes, three kisses, one on the lips, six bro-hugs, and dozens of smiles.
This wannabe chaperone can say one thing. I like band kids.
