The girls golf state championships will be held today and Tuesday in the Pinehurst area.
Salisbury’s Madison Kennedy, Lily Yatawara and Amber Lyerly will compete as a team in the 36-hole 1A-2A-3A championships at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.
Salisbury finished second to Western Alamance in the Central Regional recently held at Statesville Country Club.
East Rowan’s Samantha Haviland and West Rowan’s Katie Knepp and Alex Mills were individual qualifiers. Seventy-eight golfers are competing in the 1A-2A-3A event.
Knepp tees off at 9:50 a.m. today.
Other tee times are Haviland (10:00), Mills (10:00), Kennedy (10:10), Yatawara (10:20) and Lyerly (10:30).Union Pines is the two-time defending champion. The Vikings prevailed by 19 strokes last fall. Ragsdale, which was in the 3A ranks last season, was the 2008 runner-up.
Raleigh Athens Drive seeks to defend its 4A title at Fox Fire Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst. Davie’s Caitlyn Brake is in the event. She tees of at 9:10 a.m. today.

Gray Stone wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of the YVC championships held at Chuck Morehead Park in Albemarle.
In the boys race, Gray Stone scored 35 points. Second-place South Stanly had 52. North Rowan was eighth with 198.
South Stanly’s Sean Kluttz edged Gray Stone’s Dalton Wally for first. Gray Stone’s Kaleb Medlin was fourth. Harrison Latimer was sixth, while Mygel Bergstresser was ninth.
Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer was the individual girls winner in 21:31 and led the Knights to the team title.
Gray Stone’s Janna Featherstone was second, while Amber Watkins was third. Gray Stone’s Katherine Barrows was 11th in a PB of 25:13.
Gray Stone scored 33 as team. Chatham Central was second with 66 points. North Rowan did not have enough runners to post a team score.
Gray Stone will compete in the 1A Midwest Regional on Oct. 31 at Beeson Park in Kernersville.

West Forsyth’s baseball program retired the number of Garrison Lassiter last week.
Lassiter, 19, was an All-America shortstop who signed with the New York Yankees for a bonus of $675, 000 after the 2008 draft.
Lassiter played for Charleston in the South Atlantic League this season and batted .260 with two homers and 29 RBIs.

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played recently. Phyllis Durland won low gross, with Susan Morris second. Norma Burgess won low net, with Beth Calhoun second. Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament Results
The 3rd Annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament was held on October 17th at Corbin Hills Golf Club. The 1st place team was: Chris Owen (Captain), Clint Abernathy, and Tom Kiker. The 2nd place team was: Keith Holloway (Captain), Bob Correll, Carl Moore, and Brian Boyle.
Greg Hill won the Putting Contest; Tom Kiger won Closest to the Pin, and Ernie Wagner had the Longest Drive.
