Salisbury’s boys soccer team moved into sole possession of first place in the CCC with a 4-0 win at Thomasville on Monday.
“We got just the kind of effort we needed considering the week we have,” Salisbury coach Tom Sexton said.
The Hornets (18-1-1, 7-1) hold a one-game lead over West Davidson, which lost 2-0 against third-place East Davidson on Monday. Salisbury plays Wednesday against East Davidson and Thursday against West Davidson, which beat the Hornets in the first meeting.
Matt Cervantes, Paul Kollie (two goals) and Gerardo Sosa scored Monday for Salisbury, which led 2-0 at halftime.
“Sosa is coming into his own,” Sexton said. “He’s very fast and very physical.”
Connor Miller and Scott Van der Poel stopped one breakaway apiece and combined on the shutout. John Grant played his best defensive game of the season.
Cervantes beat three defenders on the left side for Salisbury’s first goal, and Kollie knocked a shot inside the post following a feed from Michael Mazur.
Spencer Dixon’s long diagonal pass found Kollie, who slid a shot past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. Matt Marshall, playing left back, set up the final goal with a diagonal pass to Sosa.

Jan Garus scored twice for the Mustangs. Reid Lippard also had a goal.
Garus dribbled through three North Iredell defenders for an early 1-0 lead
Garus ran onto a free kick by Andrew May to break a 1-1 tie, and a blast by Lippard off the rebound of his own shot gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead at halftime against one of the NPC’s top teams.
North Iredell fought back to tie 3-3, then took the lead for good with 10 minutes left.
Keenan Watson and Tony Mendoza had two goals each for the Raiders (13-5, 9-2).
May had a stellar defensive game for the Mustangs.
“North Iredell is one heck of a soccer team,” East coach John McNeil said. “No one expected us to be in this game, but our kids believed we had a chance. When Jan scored that first goal you saw them perk up a little.”

Sixty-four GARS members played at Crescent Golf Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gordon Correll with a net of 64.24. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 67.61 was Gene Poplin. Low ‘C’ Fight player with a net of 70.56 was Ron Ervin. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Marty Walker with a net of 66.90.
n The 3rd Annual “Saving Grace” Cystic Fibrosis Golf Tournament was held recently at Corbin Hills.
The first-place team was Chris Owen (captain), Clint Abernathy, and Tom Kiger.
The second-place team consisted of Keith Holloway (captain), Bob Correll, Carl Moore, and Brian Boyle.
Greg Hill won the putting contest. Kiger won closest to the pin. Ernie Wagner had the longest drive.
Team “Saving Grace” thanks all the golfers and sponsors for their participation on a cold day.
n The McCanless Couples played an 18-hole tournament to end their league play for the year. Twenty-eight golfers participated. Tournament winners were David Boger and Monica Green with a 68. Matt and Liz Murphy finished second with a 69. Pete and Mechelle Kuld shot 70 for third place.
Rodney Setzer and Brenda Mosley made the longest putts. Charles Gillispie and Green won the closest to the pin contests. Mechelle Kuld won the putting contest.
Points leaders for the season were Gene Seaford (215), Liz Murphy (165), Robin Leslie (147), Kim Kincaid (145). Walt Kincaid (144) and Yvonne Barger (139).
Newly elected officers are Barger (president), Brett Leslie (vice president), Robin Leslie (secretary), Mary Seaford (treasurer), Kim Kincaid (tournament chairman) and Eileen Full (social chairman).
