South Rowan’s baseball team rallied from deficits of 6-1 and 9-4 and beat A.L. Brown 10-9 in nine innings in wild non-conference action at the South diamond on Thursday night.
“I want us to play a lot cleaner and a lot better than we played, but as hard as we fought on every at-bat, especially in those late innings, I can live with it,” South coach Thad Chrismon said.
South scored three times in the sixth to get within 6-4, but when the Wonders tacked on three more in the top of the seventh to lead 9-4, it looked over.
It wasn’t.
Hits by Tyler Fuller, Chandler Corriher and Chase Labbe got a big seventh started for the Raiders. Matt Honeycutt hit a sac fly, and then Austin “Bo” Corriher delivered a single.
With South down to its last out, an error and two walks kept the seventh alive, and South finally tied the game at 9-all when Fuller beat out an infield hit for his second single of the inning.
Peyton Penninger raced home from second base with the deciding run when Fuller hit into a fielder’s choice in the ninth.
The throw home beat Penninger, but he was safe when the ball popped loose.
Labbe was the winning pitcher.
Matt Brown pitched into the seventh for A.L. Brown and gave up four runs, only two of them earned.
Jordan Reid took the loss.
• Salisbury lost 5-2 at North Forsyth on Thursday in a non-conference game.
East Rowan’s tennis team rolled 9-0 against South Rowan on Thursday and improved to 7-0 in the SPC.
Ike Emerson, Chance Brown, Robert Gray, Jeremy Price, Evan Rogers and Addison Fry won in singles.
Emerson-Gray, Rogers-Price and Fry-Boyd McCall swept doubles.
East plays at Central Cabarrus at 3:30 p.m. today to decide the SPC title.
• Singles winners for Carson in Wednesday’s 5-4 SPC victory against Cox Mill were Jonathan Martin, Graham Purcell, Marshall Wood and Casey Lucas.
The team of Wood-Lucas won in doubles.
• The SPC tournament starts on April 16 at Les Meyers Park in Concord.
East Rowan’s Karleigh Wike was one of 15 players named to the NCPreps.com 3A All-State team.
Concord’s Connor Burchfield and Cox Mill’s Matt Morgan were named to the 3A All-State boys team.
• North Rowan’s Michael Connor was named to the 2A All-State team.
Oshon West, who was county player of the year at North Rowan in 2013, will play next season at Davidson County Community College.
West is signing next Tuesday with the Storm.
West played at Louisburg this season.
• West Rowan’s Seth Martin plans to sign with Catawba Valley Community College on Monday.

In a CCC match played at Winding Creek on Wednesday, Salisbury shot 161 and won by seven shots over West Davidson.
Medalist Eric Edwards shot 36 to lead the Hornets. Abraham Post and Gabe Steinman shot 41s. Chris Queen shot 43.
North Rowan shot 194, Scorers for the Cavaliers were Tyler Mulkey (40), Steven Thurston (50), Brodie Madison (52) and Austin Wagoner (52).
West Davidson’s Zach Michael shot 37, and Nathan Curry shot 39. East Davidson’s Jake Fowler shot 39.
• In a CCC match played on Thursday at Corbin Hills, Salisbury shot 162 to top West Davidson (165). North Rowan shot 188 for third place.
Edwards and Post shot 40s. Queen and John Murphy shot 41s.
Mulkey was medalist with a 36. North’s other scorers were Austin Wagoner (49), Thurston (50) and Madison (53).
West Davidson’s Curry shot 37.
Edwards leads Curry by three strokes and Mulkey by four in the season race.
Salisbury leads the season race over West Davidson by 40 strokes.
Emily Muire scored a goal for West Rowan in Wednesday’s 2-1 SPC victory against South Rowan.
Davie’s Morgan Hendrix stole the 100th base of her career in Wednesday’s 18-1 romp against R.J. Reynolds.
Hendrix holds the school record. The 2013 CPC Player of the Year has signed with Wingate.
• Hendrix scored two runs in Davie’s 3-1 non-conference win against Central Davidson on Thursday.
Davie got strong pitching from Olivia Boger and Sarah Myers.

Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) was named first team All-SAC, while teammate Leslie Long made the second team.
Kennedy leads the team with a 78.77 stroke average over her 17 rounds.
The junior has led the team in five of nine events and has shot under 80 in 11 of her rounds.
Kennedy’s best finish this season came at the Tusculum Fall Classic where she was third overall. She has three other top-15 finishes on the season.
Long has posted a 79.71 stroke average this season over her 17 rounds.
She has finished tops on the team in four events and was runner-up at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational.
• Catawba’s Tyler Rutherford and Matt Hardman were honorable mention All-SAC.

Catawba women’s soccer coach Michael Swan announced the 2014 schedule. Catawba will play 18 matches, including eight at the newly renovated Frock Soccer Complex.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 7-6 in 10 innings on Thursday in Greenville.
Kannapolis (4-4) failed to hold a three-run lead late in the game.
Kannapolis shortstop Cleuluis Rondon went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs.
West Rowan Middle won 11-1 against North Rowan Middle.
Olen Stamper was the winning pitcher and had three hits.
Southeast won 7-2 against China Grove.
Hunter Smith, Jailen Williams, Alex Mercado and Jerry Cipres won singles matches for the Patriots.
Smith-Williams, Mercado-Cipres and Trexler Cloninger-Alex Taylor won doubles matches for Southeast.
• Knox won 5-4 against Mooresville.
Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble and Cristian Gonzalez won singles matches for the Trojans.
Simon Post-Cole Goodnight and Burton-Grenoble won in doubles.
Knox is at China Grove Tuesday.
