East Rowan’s boys qualified for the 3A state cross country meet on Saturday, while Salisbury’s girls qualified for the 2A meet.
The Mustang boys finished third in the Midwest Regional held at Charlotte’s McAlpine Park on Saturday. Ross Oden’s third-place finish paced the Mustangs. He ran 16:28.
Cole Honeycutt was fifth in 16:46. Preston Dixon (29th), Brad Oden (33rd) and Eli Walton (34th) rounded out the top five East runners.
Qualifying as individuals for the state meet were A.L. Brown’s Larry Scaggs (runner-up in 16:25) and South Rowan’s Michael York (16:56), who finished seventh.
n In the girls 3A Midwest Regional, West Rowan’s Leslie Pence (12th) and South Rowan’s Emily Kinney (13th) were individual qualifiers for the state meet.
n Katherine Shields (second), Emily Shields (third), Doreen Richardson (10th), Margaret Kaufman (52nd) and Taylor Slate (62nd) posted scores for Salisbury’s girls, who finished runner-up to West Stokes in the 2A Midwest Regional held at Dan Nicholas Park.
n Salisbury’s boys just missed qualifying for the state meet as a team. They finished fifth. Nick Summers (second in 16:40) and Philip Tonseth (third in 16:57) qualified for the state meet as individuals.
n In the 1A Midwest Regional in Kernersville, both Gray Stone teams qualified.
Led by Dalton Wally’s third-place finish, Gray Stone’s boys won the regional championship.
Gray Stone’s girls were second, They were nipped by Bishop McGuinness by one point. Amber Watkins was fourth to lead Gray Stone.
n Mooresville’s Josh Cox ran a blazing 15:58 and won the 4A West Regional at McAlpine.

n Volleyball club
The Rowan Volleyball Club and Davidson County Volleyball Association have combined to form the High Rock Volleyball Club.
The club’s purpose is to promote volleyball and improve volleyball skills.
Coaches include Kelan Rogers, Trish Hester and Suzanne Michael.
Junior Olympic tryouts are upcoming the weekend of Nov. 7-8.

n Crescent Halloween golf
Bob Boltz and Tony Petrea shot 70-69 ó 139 and won a four-hole playoff with Chris Smith and Nate Jessup to win the 12th Annual Halloween Two-Man Championship held at Crescent Golf Club. The playoff consisted of four different formats ó Best Ball, Captain’s Choice, Texas Scramble, and Alternate Shot.
On the fourth hole, Alternate Shot format, Bob Boltz-Tony Petrea made a birdie, while Chris Smith-Nate Jessup made par.
Smith and Jessup shot 65-74 ó 139 to win the First Flight. Michael Kee-Tom Seifert shot 69-71 ó 140 for second. Derek Lipe-Drue Davis shot 70-71 ó 141.
Jerry Wright and Bruce Stohlsworth shot 72-73 ó 145 and tied Christopher McCoy-Frederick Corriher (70-75 ó 145) for first place in the Second Flight.
Shooting 146 and tying for third were Ted Potts-Alan Buie, Phil McGlothlin-Brian Leahy and Paul Eagle-Rick Cox.
Matt Griffin-Chris Dellinger shot 149 to win the Third Flight. Jason Wilson-Jeremy Mabe (150) and James Joyce-Bill Merriman (154) followed.
Mark Seaford-Chad Spoon shot 163 to win the Fourth Flight. Andrew Belk-Jared Barnette (165) and Richard Starrett-Ryan Starrett (167) were next.
n Pfeiffer athletics
Jeff Cannon’s header lifted Pfeiffer to a 1-0 men’s soccer victory against top-ranked Lees-McRae on Saturday.
It was the first loss for the Bobcats. Pfeiffer is 13-4 and 8-2 in Conference Carolinas.
n Megan Reaves converted a free kick from 20 yards out to lead Pfeiffer to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory against Lees-McRae on Saturday.
Pfeiffer (11-5-3, 8-1-2) earned the No. 2 seed for this week’s conference tourney.
n Catawba athletics
Senior Andrew Landry scored all three goals as Catawba’s men’s soccer team claimed a 3-0 win at Brevard on Saturday. One of Landry’s goals was a rebound off a shot by Valentin Nava (Carson).
Tyler Held had a dozen saves as Catawba (5-11-1) snapped a seven-match losing streak.
n Catawba’s women’s swim team broke three school records in the Boo Bash Relays held at Johnson Pool on Saturday.
The women finished second, while the men were fourth in the event.
Catawba’s records came in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and the 400 medley relay.
The medley team of Lindsay Yarborough, Katie Huff (North Stanly), Leah Constan-Tatos and Laurenn Singleton posted a time of 4:05.98.
Constan-Tatos, Singleton and Huff were joined by Tory Kiefner in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.38. Singleton, Yarborough and Huff teamed with Ashley Owens to set a mark in winning the 400 free in 3:41.88.
n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team opened with a 57-48 win against the Walltown Tigers out of Durham. Banks Fisher had 23 points, 24 rebounds and five steals. Eric Edwards hit four 3s and had 24 points, 10 boards and five assists.
