Waterworks Visual Arts Center is sponsoring The BIG CHILLi: A Taste of the Best Recipes 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. The event is being held in both Waterworks and the F&M Trolley Barn.
Fifteen cooks will be preparing their famous chili recipes to share with guests attending the event, served in one-ounce cups. Cooks will also provide condiments and accompanying side items. Beer, wine and other beverages will be available, and a sweet station.
Guests will have a chance to vote on their favorite recipe. The BIG CHILLi award will be presented at 8:30 p.m.
Chili cooks are Henry Alexander, Daniel Almazan, Applebee’s Grill and Bar, Michael Childress, Andy Chmiel, Shelly Daubenmire, First United Church of Christ, Cheryl Goins, Alex Kenny, Long Horn Steak House, Barb Sorel, Uncle Buck’s, Walter Wall and Tom Wolpert.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the band No 9 Coal.

Rail Walk Studios
Artist Cathy Sigmon of Faith has joined the artists of Rail Walk Studios & Gallery.
Working as a professional artist for the past 10 years, Sigmon has earned Signature status with the Colored Pencil Society of America, exhibiting in CPSA International Exhibitions in San Diego, Houston, and Dallas-Ft. Worth. Her colored pencil painting “English Carpet Balls”is included in “The Best of Colored Pencil, Vol. 4”, published by Rockport Publishers and distributed in the US and abroad by North Light Books.
Sigmon also works in other mediums, combining colored pencil with “dropped” watercolor, acrylic and dyes. Her work has been shown in exhibitions throughout the United States.
She is participating with the eight other Rail Walk artists in an invitational exhibit at the Grace and Cameron West Art Gallery at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC. That exhibit will be in the gallery Nov. 2-24 with an opening reception Nov. 12, 6-8 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free.
Other Rail Walk artists in the exhibit include Bob and Caren Briley, Carol Dunkley, Sharon Forthofer, Karen Frazer, Annette Ragone Hall, Patt Legg, and Marietta Smith.
Sigmon’s work is on display at the Rail Walk Studios & Gallery building at 409-413 N. Lee Street in Salisbury. Gallery hours in November and December are Thursday and Friday, 2-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The gallery will be closed Thanksgiving weekend.

Christmas home tour
CHINA GROVE ó The annual Christmas Tour of Homes and Progressive Dinner sponsored by the Historical Society of South Rowan will be held Saturday, Dec. 5. Two tours will be offered, beginning at 4 and 6 p.m.
Each tour begins with hors d’ouevres served at the historical China Grove Roller Mill at 308 N. Main St., China Grove. The entree and dessert will be served at the homes.
Four houses will be toured. Each is uniquely different. Bus transportation will be provided for the tours.

Proceeds will be used to maintain the Roller Mill.
Nutcracker tickets
Tickets to The Nutcracker are available at the Rowan County Tourism Development Authority, 204 E. Innes St. A map of Keppel Auditorium will be on hand to help choose specific seats. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 704-638-3100.
There will be two performances of this collaboration between the Salisbury Symphony and Piedmont Dance Theatre: Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and Dec. 20 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets for orchestra and mezzanine seating are $25 for adults (19 and older) and $12 for children (18 and younger). Tickets for balcony seating are $20 for adults and $10 for children.

RiverRun Film Festival
WINSTON-SALEM ó Due to the growth of the annual Winston-Salem based RiverRun International Film Festival, it will expand to an 11-day event in 2010, straddling two weekends for the first time in the event’s history. The dates for the 12th annual RiverRun International Film Festival will be April 15-25, 2010.

Dance Federation
Thirty years ago, the “President’s Charity Ball was created to raise funds to be donated to a “charity of choice within North Carolina. The 2009 campaign will come to a close at the NC Federation Dance on Nov. 21 at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux in Fayetteville.
The Folk, Round and Square Dance Federation of North Carolina has held Hospice benefit dances in six regions of the state. Hospice of NC has been the charity of choice of the federation since 1990. This year they will make a donation of $43,317, bringing the 20 year total given to Hospice to 689,747. The funds raised during the 2009 President’s Charity Ball campaign will bring the total 30 years of giving to $1,023,895.
