MOCKSVILLE — Davie County’s baseball team stayed undefeated with an 8-1 win against West Rowan on Tuesday.

The War Eagles (6-0) got another great pitching outing from ECU signee Carson Whisenhunt. He struck out 17 Falcons in six innings and combined with Jacob Campbell on a no-hitter. Campbell added another strikeout in the seventh.

Steven Smith scored a run for West in the second.

Anthony Azar and Spencer Nifong had two hits each for Davie. Aaron Williams drove in two runs.

The teams will play again tonight in Mount Ulla.

Salisbury also got a combined no-hitter on Tuesday, with Parker Lippard and Nick Peltz throwing three innings each in a 10-0, six-inning win against Lexington.

Lippard struck out two, while Peltz fanned five.

The Hornets (5-1, 4-1) had seven hits, including two each from Jack Fisher and Bo Rusher. Rusher drove in two runs. Blaine Shellhorn had a triple.

Salisbury scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to end the Central Carolina Confernce game by the 10-run rule.

WELCOME — South Rowan had a great chance to upset North Davidson on Tuesday, but couldn’t get the key hit in a 2-1 loss to the Black Knights in a CCC game.

South (2-4, 2-3) had runners at second and third with none out in the seventh but couldn’t score.

Kane Kepley drove in the only run for South.

Luke Hiskey pitched well for five innings for the Raiders, a night after   Eli Hiskey pitched well against Carson. Jack Weaver turned in two strong relief innings.

“We got out of some tough spots and did a lot of good things,” South coach Thad Chrismon said. “We’re finding out that if we don’t walk people, we’ll give ourselves a chance.”

South plans to move up Friday’s scheduled home game against North Davidson to Thursday.

CLEMMONS — West Forsyth pushed across a run in the eighth inning against reliever Bryson Wagner and beat East Rowan on Tuesday, 1-0, in a non-conference game.

Blake White, Wagner and Avery Shull led East’s hitters with 1-for-3 efforts.

A.L. Brown lost to Robinson in a South Piedmont Conference game played on Tuesday, 10-8.

Tyler Grady homered and drove in three for the Bulldogs, while Austin Dayvault also knocked in three runs.

Austin Lowery went 3-for-3 for the Wonders. Antonio Knight scored three runs. Chandler Teal had two hits and two RBIs. Bradley Hathcock had two hits.

Matt Moore won it. Chandler Teal took the loss.

Michael Gracer and Caden Grider drove in three runs each for Northwest Cabarrus in an 11-4 South Piedmont Conference win against Concord on Monday.

Grider had two doubles.

HS basketball

Davie County’s Mike Absher was named Central Piedmont Conference boys basketball coach of the year.

Davie’s Owen McCormack and R.J. Reynolds’ Mysta Goodloe were co-players of the year.

Davie’s Michael Walton,  Jacob Hendrix and Troy Griggs made All-CPC.

HS girls golf

East Rowan’s Carmen Fraley, a two-time county player of the year, announced that she’ll sign with Montreat.

HS boys golf

East Rowan’s Colby Patterson shot a 30 for nine holes at McCanless.

Patterson had an eagle on the par-4 No. 5 hole.

Alex Miller (37), Austin Miller (39) and Cole Mabry (46) were the other scorers for East. The Mustangs shot 152 and won by 11 strokes over Asheboro.

Carson was third at 181.  Ethan Scarborough shot 39 to lead the Cougars.

HS girls soccer

Lejla Mehmedovic scored for West Rowan’s soccer team in a 1-all tie with Davie County.

Mackenna Clifton had the assist.

Ryley Corriher had 10 saves, including a spectacular one with a minute left   to preserve the tie.

HS boys tennis

Carson won against North Iredell in Tuesday’s North Piedmont Conference match, 8-1.

Jacob Horton, Avery Paschal, Ethen Fesperman, Cameron Dunn, Nathaniel Kimball and Thomas Bost swept singles for the Cougars.

Horner/Dunn and Kimball/Bost were winning doubles teams.

West Rowan opened NPC play with a 7-2 win against East Rowan.

Singles winners for the Falcons were Kevin Sullivan, Trevor Mervine, TJ Smith, Alex Keadle and Steve Wilmot.

Doubles winners were Keadle/Layton Butler and Wilmot/Mervine.

HS wrestling

South Rowan’s Logan Lambert, Logan Perry, Michael Sloop and Jacob Cox made the All-Central Carolina Conference team.

Salisbury’s Michael Lowry, Kevion Chunn and  Javon White also made All-CCC.

Ledford’s Andy Chappell was voted coach of the year, while Ledford’s Zane Hepler was named the league’s wrestler of the year.

HS softball

South Rowan lost to Oak Grove in a Central Carolina Conference game played on Tuesday, 11-4.

Anna Blume had three hits for the Raiders, including a homer.  Karley Wood and McKinley Faw had two hits each.

  Central Davidson defeated Salisbury in a CCC game played on Tuesday, 12-0, in five innings.

Ellen Yang had the only hit for the Hornets. She stole two bases and also did the pitching for SHS.

Davie County won against Glenn in Central Piedmont Conference action, 3-2.

Davie pitcher Rachel Bostic struck out eight.

Emma Patterson had three hits and scored two runs for the War Eagles (3-1, 1-0).

Destiny Thornton homered for Central Cabarrus in a 12-7 South Piedmont Conference softball win against Cox Mill on Tuesday.

College baseball

At Newman Park, Catawba won the second game to split Tuesday’s doubleheader with Indiana (Pa.).

Hunter Shepherd and Joe Butts homered in an 8-5 loss to start the day. Shepherd, Heath Mitchem and Jacob Nester had two hits. Caleb Link took the loss.

• In the second game, Riley Myers (3-0) pitched five strong innings to lead an 11-3 victory.

Shepherd and DJ Laxton homered. Nester had three hits, while Butts and Mitchem had two apiece.

Catawba hosts Carson-Newman in a SAC series this weekend.

College golf

MONROE —  Catawba finished in seventh place at the Hargett Memorial Men’s Golf Tournament. The three-round tournament concluded on Tuesday at the 6,904-yard, par-72 Stonebridge Golf Club.

Hunter Donahue led the Indians with a 226 total and placed 20th.

In women’s golf, Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) led UNC Pembroke in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Windmere, Fla.

Bare shot 78-74-80 — 232 (16-over) and tied for 32nd.

College softball

Catawba swept Belmont  Abbey on Tuesday at Whitley Field.

Preston Ellenberg’s walk-off two-run homer lifted Catawba to a 5-3 win in the opener.

• In the second game, Catawba (11-6) took a 7-5 victory. Leah Huggins had three hits, while Allie Baker and Jordan Dean had two each.

Madison Hunter won the first game and saved the second one. Brooke Walser got the win in the nightcap.

Catawba plays a home doubleheader against Bloomsburg on Thursday.

College basketball

Newberry’s Luke Gibson (North Stanly) was named an Academic All-American.

Nevada’s  Caleb Martin, who started his high school career at Davie County, was named first team All-Mountain West Conference, while twin brother Cody Martin made second team.

LAS VEGAS — Saint Mary’s heard for weeks about the NCAA Tournament bubble. First four in, first four out, fortunate to be in the discussion to be included in the field of 68.

Saint Mary’s ended the nation’s longest winning streak and Gonzaga’s six-year reign as West Coast Conference Tournament champions, grinding out a 60-47 victory in the title game on Tuesday night.

College tennis

Catawba (9-3, 1-1 SAC) blanked Coker 7-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis action on Tuesday at the Johnson Tennis Center.

The Catawba men’s tennis team (9-3, 2-0) topped Coker on Tuesday, 5-2.

Catawba hosts Mount Olive on Thursday.

Local golf

Forty-six GARS members played at Warrior Golf Club on Monday.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Bernard Caldwell with a net of 63.25.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Allen Hammill with a net of 62.72.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Tommy Ellis with a net of 67.38.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Ralph Luther with a net of 66.77.

Bernard Caldwell shot a 69 for low gross and also was 2 shots better than his age of 71.  Allen Hammill won low net.

Lynn Shook eagled the par-4  No. 14 hole.
