CHINA GROVE — Cole Hales pitched a complete game and struck out 12 batters on Wednesday to lead Carson to a 3-1 non-conference baseball victory against North Rowan.

Hales (1-1) didn’t walk a batter and limited the Cavaliers to three hits.   

Jonathan Spry (0-1) pitched a complete game for the Cavaliers (0-5).

Carson (4-1) scored a run in the first inning when Hales walked and Logan Rogers drove him in with a two-out double.

North tied it in the fifth when Spry’s single scored Charlie Durham.

Carson scored the decisive runs in the sixth. Luke Barringer walked, stole second and third and scored on a hit by Rogers.

A wild pitch and Zeb Burns’ bunt single moved Rogers to third. He scored an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Alewine.

Deacon Wike had two of Carson’s five hits.

The non-conference game was moved up 24 hours as North’s Yadkin Valley Conference game at Uwharrie Charter has been moved up from Friday to tonight due to weather concerns. North lost to Uwharrie Charter on Tuesday, 20-0.

MOUNT ULLA — Unbeaten Davie County continues to get great pitching and beat West Rowan for the second straight night, 4-0, in a non-conference game.

Spencer Nifong fired six shutout innings for the War Eagles (7-0). He fanned seven and held the Falcons (3-2)  to  a pair  of hits — singles by Jake Perez and Daniel Sell. Nifong had two hits for Davie.

Daniel Durham (1-1) pitched six innings for the Falcons, and Payne Stolsworth worked the seventh.

CLEMMONS — East Rowan sophomore Jake Hunter struck out 12 in six innings in Tuesday’s game at West Forsyth that the Mustangs (3-3) finally lost 1-0 in the eighth inning.

Hunter (1-0) hasn’t allowed a run in three starts and he’s struck out 35 in 15 innings, while walking two.

KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan’s baseball team won at Northwest Cabarrus in Wednesday’s non-conference game, 3-2.

Charlie Klinger scored twice, including the tiebreaking run in the fifth.

East (4-3) got six hits. Griffin Warden had a double. Wayne Mize and  Hunter had RBIs.

East pitchers Jake Davis and Corbin Durham held Northwest (4-2) to three hits. Davis won it. Durham relieved in the bottom of the fifth and earned a save.

Caden Parker and Caden Grider had RBIs for the Trojans.

HS boys tennis

Salisbury won against Ledford in a key Central Carolina Conference tennis match on Wednesday, 7-2.

Roarke Burton won on a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Sean Archer, Leo Schiavanato,  Jander Rodas-Palacios and Juan Salazar won their singles matches for the  Hornets.

Rodas-Palacios/Burton and Archer/Salazar won doubles matches.

Ledford’s Brenner White won at No. 2 singles and Ledford took a tight match at No. 1 doubles.

HS girls soccer

Carson won against A.L. Brown on Wednesday in a non-conference game, 6-3.

Hannah Isley scored two goals for the Cougars (2-2), while  Riley Isley, Lani Isley, Kate Carter and Sydney Borst scored a goal each.

HS track and field

A.L. Brown’s boys swept the relays and won a  track and field meet against South Piedmont Conference rivals Cox Mill, Robinson and  Northwest Cabarrus to open the season.

A.L. Brown’s Josh Parks won the 110 hurdles (14.8), high jump (6 feet) and triple jump (41-7).

Jalen Neal won the 100 (10.9) and 200  (22.7). Samuel Calleja won the discus (121 feet, 9 inches). Kevin Stegall won the 800 (2:10).  Jalin Goode won the shot put (40-0).  Tristan Turner won the 300 hurdles (44.8).

The Wonders scored 112.5 points with 6-4-3-2-1 scoring. Cox Mill was second with 74 points.

Cox Mill scored 101.5 to win the girls meet. Northwest Cabarrus was second. A.L. Brown finished fourth.

HS football

Carson long snapper Andrew Bradshaw announced that he’ll be signing with Carson-Newman.

HS softball

CONCORD — West Rowan beat Robinson in non-conference softball on Wednesday, 6-2.

Taylor Walton’s two-run homer in the first inning with Kenadi Sproul on base got the Falcons off to a good start. Walton went 3-for-3.

Whitley Arnott had two hits and two RBIs and dominated on the mound with 13 strikeouts in six innings. Walton pitched the seventh.

Hannah Pratt had two hits for the Falcons (3-1).

KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan won at Northwest Cabarrus on Wednesday, 11-7, in a non-conference slugfest.

Both teams had 14 hits.

Haley Strange homered and drove in six runs for the Mustangs (2-2).

Mackenzie Sprinkle and Kaitlyn Samples had three hits each for East.

Kayden Monk, Maddie Monteleone and Carly Hannah had two RBIs each for  NWC.

WELCOME — Katie Jewell and Katleyn McGee had RBIs for Carson in a 7-2 loss at North Davidson in non-conference play on Wednesday.

Jewell entered the game in the second inning in relief and didn’t allow any earned runs the rest of the way.

Foster Sharpe had three hits and two RBIs for the Black Knights, while Riley Lingerfelt pitched a complete game.

Mooresville’s softball team beat Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, 11-4.

Caitlin Mann drove in four for the Blue Devils (5-1). Hailey Lane had three hits, and Mariah Pearson homered. Kali Morton got the win, and Aubrey Tuell earned a save.

SPC wrestling

A.L. Brown’s All-South Piedmont Conference wrestlers are Kaleb McGee, Gavin Hartsell, Jaquan Russell and Mason Ingram.

Ingram was named the league’s wrestler of the year.

Coaches of the year are Central Cabarrus’ Ed Masterton and A.L. Brown’s Adam Monteith.

College hoops

Catawba’s fourth-seeded men will face off against No. 5 UNC Pembroke at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the opening round of the Southeast Regional at the Levine Center on the campus of Queens University.

The regional is split into early and late sessions.  Catawba plays in the late session after the 5:30 p.m. Queens-Emmanuel contest.

The Catawba-UNC Pembroke winner takes on the Queens-Emmanuel winner in a regional semifinal at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults per session and $5 for college students with ID, children 17 and under and seniors 62 or older.

NPC swimming

Carson’s Malia Hughley,  Olivia Shorter, Taylor Sever, Olivia Weatherby and Savannah Hart made the All-North Piedmont Conference girls swim team, along with West Rowan’s Maris Wainwright.

The All-NPC boys swim team includes West Rowan’s Matthew Gouge and Carson’s Matthew Epley, Cole Dixon, Andrew Sadler, Brandon Yow, Cooper Sever and Simon Foster.

Carson’s Caleb Helms was named the coach of the year.

Swimmers of the year are Salem Haire (North Iredell girls) and Joseph Moore (South Iredell boys).

CCC swimming

Salisbury’s Emily Knorr, Katie Knorr, Calista Erhart, Anna Grace Woolly,  Phoebe Hollingsworth made the All-Central Carolina girls swim team.

Salisbury’s Roarke Burton was runner-up for conference player of the year. Also making the All-CCC boys swim team from Salisbury were Roshen Amin, David Holden and Gabriel McLendon.

South Rowan’s Blaise Bumgarner, Cameron Hurd, Christian Reynolds and Noah Severt made the All-CCC team.

Piper Burton (East Davidson girls) and  Xander Setzer (Ledford boys) are the swimmers of the year.

Rachel Greene (Oak Grove girls) and Brian Wells (North Davidson boys) are the coaches of the year.
