The first time I heard the phrase “bumper crop” was three years ago as I was reading the old testament book of Leviticus.

I was on a journey of reading through the entire bible; a challenge that I think many can relate to. After several attempts in the past, I was determined that this one was going to be different, I was going to do something I have never done before and that was to read the bible systematically.

The teachings on the bumper crop blessing is found in Leviticus 25:18-22. In these few short verses God unlocks the key to having more and bountifully; moreover, in terms that the people fully understood, what with Israel being an agricultural society at the time. God was communicating spiritual blessings in earthly terms just as Jesus was in the practice of doing with parables in the New Testament.

However, this was my first time being introduced to the concept of a bumper crop blessing and I was so blown away.

So, what is a bumper crop blessing? According to verse 21, it is a harvest blessing from God in which the land yields more than expected (a surplus). God said to the Israelites, whose primary income was farming, in verse 22 that they will still be benefiting from the crops of the past harvest as they reap their new harvest, all because of the bumper crop blessing that He will cause to happen for them.

Wow! All I said after reading this was “Lord give me a bumper crop.” Due to the profound impact it had on me, I shared it with my congregation one Sunday morning. It is a normal thing after a sermon for the members to say to you, “Pastor, that was a good sermon,” but rarely after a sermon will a member to come back later and ask about the sermon and the text — but that was what happened. One of the ladies in the church was so inspired by the teaching on the bumper crop blessing that she shared it with her women’s praying group and they all wanted to learn more about it. Amazing!

Friend, we live in times where it seems we can never have enough resources to meet our needs. It seems we are constantly living paycheck to paycheck, and sometimes digging a hole to cover another to pay our bills.

I’ve got news for you. God wants to give you a bumper crop blessing. That instead of being penniless one week after getting your paycheck, you can still be living off your previous income while you receive your next paycheck. It is possible and plausible in God’s economy.
What is the catch? No stress, Jesus had paid it all on the cross for you and me. Just total obedience to God and His Word (Bible). What He told the Israelites in Leviticus 25:18-19 is what

He is still telling you and me: “Keep my laws and obey my regulations” and your income will yield a bumper crop and you will eat and live securely in 2019.  In St. John 10:10, Jesus said He came that we may have life and more abundantly, an eternal bumper crop blessing.
