Area Sports Briefs: Carson clinches baseball title

Deacon Wike pitched five no-hit innings to lead Carson’s baseball team to an 8-1 North Piedmont Conference win against South Iredell on Tuesday.
Carson clinched the NPC championship for the second straight season.
Logan Rogers had two RBIs for the Cougars. Rogers, C.P. Pyle and Aaron Misenheimer had doubles for Carson (17-2, 8-1).
Chase Drinkard pitched the sixth and seventh.

East Rowan got another strong pitching effort from Jake Hunter (4-1) and key hits from Bryson Wagner and Blake White in Tuesday’s 3-1 North Piedmont Conference win against North Iredell.
East (10-8, 6-3) stayed tied for second place with West Rowan.

West Rowan scored seven runs in the second inning and rolled to an easy 13-2 North Piedmont Conference win against Statesville on Tuesday.
JT Fecteau had two hits and three RBIs for the Falcons (12-5, 6-3). Carsen Bailey also had two hits and three RBIs.
Winning pitcher Cullen Davis (4-2) had two hits.

In South Piedmont Conference baseball on Tuesday, Bryson Birmingham singled home the winning run in the eighth to give Central Cabarrus a 5-4 win against Robinson.
Evan McGee pitched seven strong innings for the Vikings. Jack Swan pitched the top of the eighth and got the win. Sam Yelton had two RBIs.

In SPC baseball, A.L. Brown pounded out 18 hits and beat Concord 12-7 on Tuesday.
Caleb Beaver had four hits for the Wonders, while Chandler Teal and Austin Lowery had three each. Lowery and Antonio Knight had triples.
Brycen Schenck was winning pitcher.

Cox Mill clinched the SPC baseball championship with a 7-2 win against Norhwest Cabarrus on Tuesday.
Zach Zedalis pitched a strong game for a team coached by former South Rowan standout Parker Hubbard.
Nick Pratico, CJ Hassell and Cam Lowke led the offense for Chargers.

Salisbury fell to North Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference game on Tuesday, 9-0.
Bo Rusher took the loss.
North Davidson scored four in the first inning and never gave the Hornets a chance to get back into it.
North Davidson’s Jonathan Conway had a no-hitter until Rusher singled in the sixth.
Wesley Stewart had four hits for the Black Knights, and Mason Everhart homered.

South Rowan got a big Central Carolina Conference win against Central Davidson on Tuesday, 4-3.
Jarrid Nelson and Drew Watkins had two hits each for the surging Raiders (12-8. 9-6).
Luke Hiskey (3-3) pitched six innings for the win, and Nelson got the save.
HS boys tennis
West Rowan won the North Piedmont Conference Tournament and qualified five players for regional action.
West’s team of Steve Wilmot/Trevor Mervine won the tournament doubles championship.
Alex Keadle/Layton took third place in doubles, while Kevin Sullivan took third in singles.

Salisbury’s Jander Rodas-Palacios won the singles championship in the Central Carolina Conference Tournament.
Rodas-Palacios beat West Devon Lane in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0, and then beat Lexington’s Andy Casados 6-3,6-3 for the championship.
HS softball
CHINA GROVE — Carson beat West Rowan on Tuesday, 3-1, to give the Falcons their first loss in the North Piedmont Conference.
Carson scored three runs without a hit in the bottom of the first. There was a hit batsman, a walk, an error, two passed balls and a sac fly.
That’s all the Cougars (12-7, 7-2) got, but it was enough for pitcher Katie Jewell, who struck out eight Falcons and didn’t walk a batter.
Makayla Johnson had the only hit for the Cougars.
West (14-3, 8-1) scored its run in the top of the first on a hit by Reagan Haggas.
West’s Whitley Arnott pitched a one-hitter, struck out eight and walked one.
West can still clinch an outright league championship by beating Statesville at home on Thurday.
Carson finishes the regular season Thursday at South Iredell.

Sydnee Hilliard pitched a no-hitter and Chloe Everhart hit a grand slam in Ledford’s 15-0 Central Carolina Conference win against Salisbury on Tuesday in three innings.

South Rowan pounded Thomasville 15-0 in four innings for a CCC win on Tuesday.
Zoie Miller pitched the shutout. Courtney Mullins had four hits and three RBIs. Anna Blume had a double and a triple. McKinely Faw and Kali Thompson had two RBIs apiece.
Local golf
GARS members played at Warrior.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Ray Pope with a net of 65.70. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 69.13.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Jerry Teter with a net of 63.08. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Tommy Seamon with a net of 62.93.
Larry Petrea had low gross with a 73 and Seamon won low net score.
HS boys golf
Oak Grove shot 309 in an 18-hole match at Winding Creek on Tuesday to win the Central Carolina Conference championship.
Salisbury placed third at 316 . Hank Robins (75), Will Fowler (77), Luke Graeber (79) and Will Webb (85) were the scorers for the Hornets.
South Rowan’s Andrew Coward shot 74, while Andrew Jackson shot 78. South shot 338.
Robins tied for third for the season at 307. Jackson also shot 307, while Coward shot 308.

East Rowan shot 161 at McCanless on Tuesday and beat runner-up West Rowan by three strokes in a North Piedmont Conference match.
Colby Patterson shot 36 to lead the Mustangs. Austin Miller shot 40, Cole Mabry shot 41, and Ethan Mastro shot 44.
Dalton Kepley and Jake Carlton shot 40s for West. McGwire Owen shot 41, and Davis Tadlock shot 43.
Ethan Scarborough shot 36 to lead Carson.
Patterson and Scarbrough shared medalist honors.
The 18-hole NPC Championships will be held today at Warrior at 2 p.m.
HS girls soccer
Carson defeated East Rowan on Tuesday in North Piedmont Conference play, 9-0.
Gracie Thomason scored three goals. Sydney Borst and Lani Isley scored two each, and Emelyn Sotelo and Taylor Conrad had one apiece.

In North Piedmont Conference soccer on Tuesday, West Rowan lost to South Iredell, 2-0.
Ryley Corriher made 12 saves for the Falcons.
Mid. school soccer
Erwin’s girls won against China Grove, 6-1.
Lindsey Cook led the Eagles with four goals and Allie Martin added two.
Mariah Lowder had two assists, and Anna Hedenskog had an assist.
Bethany Brady recorded four saves.

College baseball
Hunter Shepherd’s homer in the 10th inning lifted Catawba to a 4-3 win against Belmont Abbey on Tuesday.
Jeremy Simpson drove in two runs for the Indians (35-12). Peyton Williams was the winning pitcher.
College tennis
Catawba’s women lost to Tusculum 4-1 in a quarterfinal round of the SAC tournament on Tuesday.
College golf
CAMDEN, S.C. –Queens University rallied from a three-stroke deficit to overtake Newberry and capture the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the par-70 Camden Country Club on Tuesday.
The Royals shot 288 in the final round, good enough surpass Newberry’s 292.
Catawba finished ninth.
Catawba’s Tanner Bibey tied for eighth.
Queens earns an automatic qualifier to the Division II South/Southeast Regional on May 9-11 at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Intimidators
SALISBURY, Md. — Kanapolis lost at Delmarva on Tuesday, 6-4.
Tyler Joyner (3-0) got the win with a scoreless inning in relief while Wilber Perez (0-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.
Steele Walker had two hits for Kannapolis, which is 0-4 against Delmarva.
