… Double East Landis Fire District tax
Why don’t you just bleed the residents completely dry and then there would be no need for any of this? Lowering that kilowatt rate is what everyone should be looking at. Then, you might not have such a packed house at the meetings.
— Kelly Cooke Owens
Landis should have plenty of money to buy new turn out gear for the department. As much as they charge for power their should be plenty of money laying around.
— Wesley Lee
Maybe they wouldn’t need to do this is they could get that embezzled money back.
— William H. Moffitt
… Do Rowan’s communities want new Dollar Generals?
It might be good to spend some money improving the stores that already exist. The ones I have been in feel dirty and unorganized. If the residents (taxpayers) do not want it in Mt Ulla, then that should be honored.
— Pamela Evans Orbison
Why doesn’t Dollar General move into East Spencer?
— Mark Lyerly
… As development comes north, maintain county’s character
What could be done to make “infill development” more attractive to developers who are not currently seeking it out? Would this involve restricting development on non-infill land, at a time when Rowan County’s families are finally experiencing a glimmer of hope on the jobs’ front?

City Council to reconsider Grievous Gallery alcohol permit
Does Salisbury want business or not? Does Salisbury want to join the rest of the world and come into the 21st century?
I just came from Disney World, where beer, wine and spirits can be purchased in the park and carried around. That’s with children present.
No one cares or even notices. Why would we even care that a tax paying business has beer or anything else?
— Grant Eagle
… No reason to suspect religious left has influence
For good or for bad, evangelicals will not support the Democratic Party en masse as long as the Democratic platform includes support for abortion & gay marriage. Its that moral righteousness that abhors big government, except big government that dictates morality. An evangelical could support the left on every single issue except one of those, and they will vote Republican every single time as a result.
— Eric Shock
I’ve wondered how Republicans draping themselves in the mantle of Christianity could proceed to enact legislation that is 180 degrees away from the teachings of Jesus. It’s almost like they just namedrop Him to cadge a few more votes. Surely that’s not the case, right?
— Chris Coleman
Salisbury City Council to consider Depot as historic landmark
It is on the National Historic Register. That is different than the new landmark status the county and city have, which afford the owners a 50% break on property taxes. This is an income-producing property for the Historic Salisbury Foundation. Even though it is a non profit organization, it must pay property taxes on it.
— Greg Rapp

In case teachers need help reading all this code, the info presented in this article is a subtle way of telling you all to put in your personal days.

Blotter: Nursing assistant charged with assault …
As a former healthcare worker, I am very upset with the release of the nursing assistant on a written promise. To assault one in your care is horrible. To assault a 91-year-old veteran is unforgiveable.
— Cynthia Hillard
… Pickleball squares off against tennis
There are many tennis matches played by Livingstone College on these courts. We agree that these courts should be enhanced for more tennis.

I love Chewy. They have an amazing selection of products and their customer service is first-rate. I’m glad to have them in our community. Thanks to all who worked to make this happen.

— Lynn Kesler
This is the best news for Rowan County residents in years, and opens the I-85 corridor in our county to more and better paying jobs!
— Jeff Morris
Letter: Count him as one who wants to see tax returns
Personally, I’m more concerned about seeing the tax returns of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and the rest of the career politicians on both sides of the aisle who’ve become multi-millionaires on a government salary.
— Maria Rossi
Letter: School system can show support by canceling class
Rowan -Salisbury Schools typically shows leadership in our state and is progressive in allowing teachers and students to work from home on snow days as well as becoming a renewal district. This should be no different.
— Dawn Howell
Editorial: All should cheer Chewy announcement
$28,000 is just above poverty level for a family of four. In this market, I predict they will have to raise their salaries to fill all those positions.
— Doug Paris
