LANDIS — An unidentified man suffered a traumatic brain injury Friday when he was hit by a train, Rowan County officials said.

Authorities said the African-American man was lying between the tracks and is believed to have been struck by the brake line as the train passed over him. He had a cut to his head above his left eye and a cut to his left shin.

The accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Pinnacle Way Drive in Landis.

The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast in Concord, where he was placed in the intensive care unit for treatment of a traumatic brain injury.

The man had no identification or cellphone, authorities said, but he appeared to be intoxicated or impaired. When Rowan County sheriff’s investigators arrived, he was being treated by emergency medical personnel.

The train conductor said he saw the man lying between the metal tracks when the train traveled over him. Authorities questioned people who live in the area, but no one knew his identity or was aware of the accident.

Sheriff’s officials said the man’s condition is stable.

The man was wearing a red T-shirt, gray shorts and black socks. He has short hair and a full beard, authorities said.
