West Rowan’s boys, who recently won the Rowan County championship, added the championship of the North Piedmont Conference to their list of accomplishments on Tuesday at East Rowan.

Jalen Houston led the Falcons. He won the 100, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Houston also ran on the winning 4×100 team.

Elijah Graham won the 200 and long jump for West, while Jeriah Ford took the high jump. Thomas Waldo won the 800.

West totaled 128 points to 109 for runner-up Carson. Other scores were Statesville (95), South Iredell (95), East Rowan (81) and North Iredell (49).

Zac Barbee won the 3200 for Carson, and the Cougars took first place in the 4×400 relay.

Carson’s William Fuller won two wheelchair events.

East Rowan winners were Christian Bennett in the shot put and discus; Cooper Wright in the 400, and Sam Wall in the triple jump.

Girls  track

Carson’s girls also added the NPC championship to their Rowan County crown.

Carson scored 177 points to easily outdistance South Iredell (112.5), East Rowan (87.5), Statesville (78), North Iredell (52) and West Rowan (34).

Mikaila Gadson led the way for the Cougars, winning the 100, 200 and 400 and running on the first-place 4×200 team.

Brianna Hargrove won the 300 hurdles, Kimberly Barrera won the 800, and Iyonna Parker won the shot put.

East won the 4×100 and got firsts from Katelyn Sprinkle in the 100 hurdles and Iyahnna Neal in the discus.

Surgery for White

Carson graduate Owen White is scheduled for Tommy John surgery today. That’s ulnar collateral ligament  reconstruction inside the elbow.

After a record-setting baseball career at Carson, White was drafted on the second round last June by the Texas Rangers.

White, 19,  was a South Carolina commit, but  the Rangers were able to sign him for a $1.5 million bonus.

White pitched in an  instructional league last fall, but he  hasn’t pitched in an official minor league game yet.

The chances of a complete recovery for White are around 90 percent.

Rehabilitation  from the surgery for a pitcher usually requires at least a year.

College volleyball

Michaela White (Carson) won the “Most Inspirational” Award for UNC Wilmington volleyball.

College baseball

Catawba’s all-tournament selections in addition to MVP Hunter Shepherd, a two-way player, were pitchers Bryan Ketchie, Riley Myers, Sawyer Strickland and Peyton Williams, catcher Cameron Morrison and third baseman Jackson Raper.

College soccer

Freshman defender Taylor Mauldin (South Rowan) was named Rookie of the Year for Emory & Henry. She started 15 of 17 matches.

Club softball

N.C. State’s club softball team beat Clemson 7-6 in the South Atlantic Regional championship game.

The team, which includes former West Rowan standouts Peyton Greene and Parker Greene, will play next in the National Club Softball Assocation World Series in Columbus, Ga. on May 16-19.

High school soccer

Carson won against West Rowan in Tuesday’s North Piedmont Conference soccer match, 6-1.

Gracie Thomason and Riley Isley scored two goals each. Kate Carter and Sydney Borst scored a goal apiece.

Chloe Patterson scored on a PK for the Falcons.

Ryley Corriher made nine saves for West.

High school baseball

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan had a tougher time than expected with Statesville but beat the Greyhounds 6-2 in a first-round game in the North Piedmont Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

Casey Gouge was the winning pitcher.

Payne Stolsworth’s three-run double in the fifth finally broke open a close game for third-seeded West (16-6) against the sixth-seeded Greyhounds.

Daniel Durham and Daniel Sell had triples for the Falcons.

West will be at home this afternoon to take on East Rowan in the first game of a semifinal doubleheader.

LANDIS — North Davidson scored six runs in the first inning and romped to a 12-0 victory over Salisbury in a Central Carolina Conference Tournament semifinal on Tuesday at South Rowan.

Jackson McAllister and Taylor Stewart blasted homers for the second-seeded Black Knights.

Merritt Beeker held the Hornets (13-11) to three hits and struck out nine.

Blaine Shellhorn had a double for the Hornets, while Vance Honeycutt and Archie Dees had singles.

Parker Lippard took the  loss. Jack Fisher pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Salisbury projects to make the 2A state playoffs.

In a Central Carolina Conference Tournament semifinal on Tuesday at South Rowan, top-seeded Ledford rode the pitching of Jake Stroud to a 4-1 win against fourth-seeded West Davidson.

In the first round of the South Piedmont Conference Tournament on Tuesday, A.L. Brown took charge early and beat Robinson, 9-5.

Matt Shubert had three hits and three RBIs for the fifth-seeded Wonders.

Jacob Baucom pitched six innings and also had two hits. Austin Lowery, Antonio Knight and Chandler Teal also had two hits.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs got two RBIs from Tyler Grady.

Sixth-seeded Concord surprised third-seeded tournament host Central  Cabarrus 4-3 on Tuesday in South Piedmont Conference Tournament action.

The Spiders built a 4-0 lead and held on behind the pitching of Maven Parker, who racked up seven strikeouts.

High school softball

In a first-round North Piedmont Conference, East Rowan rolled against Statesville, 16-0, in three innings.

Karley Teague pitched two innings, and Emma Walker pitched one.

Third-seeded East plays second-seeded Carson in a semifinal today at West Rowan at 4:30 p.m.

Riley Lingerfelt pitched a six-inning no-hitter to lead North Davidson to a 10-0 win over West Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference Tournament semifinal played on Tuesday.

Foster Sharpe hit a home run for the undefeated Black Knights.

In  a South Piedmont Conference semifinal on Tuesday, Northwest Cabarrus edged Robinson, 5-4.

Kayden Monk pitched a complete game. Rori Wilson and Bailey Wilcher had two RBIs each.

Hailey Lane homered and tripled. Kali Morton  pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight batters.

Sixty-three GARS members played at the Revival at the Crescent Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 64.79. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ted Weant with a net of 63.50. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Lou Manning with a net of 62.47. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bill Saunders with a net of 61.20.

Low gross score was a 71 shot by Petrea. Low net was won by Saunders.

Shooting their age or better were Frank Masingo, 83, shot an 81; Saunders, 84, shot an 84; Lou Manning, 85,  shot an 82, and J.C. Ritchie, 94, shot an 84.

Legion softball

Rowan Post 112 Legion softball  will have signup/tryouts for Junior and Senior  teams on May 10 from  6-9 p.m. at East Rowan High.  Tryouts are for rising 7th-graders through graduating seniors.
