South Rowan is already getting into the Christmas spirit.

The annual South Rowan Christmas Parade is scheduled to roll through China Grove and Landis Tuesday with 91 participants. Among the parade’s participants are Cub Scouts, local businesses and two high school marching bands.

“It’s exciting because it kicks off the holiday season and just gets people in the Christmas spirit,” said Jennifer Ritchie, a parade organizer. “It’s something that people look forward to every year, for more than 30 years.”

Parade participants are scheduled to start lining up at 1:30 p.m. and be in position no later than 2:15 p.m. Shortly after, the dozens of participants will make their way down Main Street in Landis, ending at the intersection of Limits Street.

The parade picks back up in China Grove at the intersection of Stevens and Main Street in China Grove, stopping at Main’s intersection with Ross Street.

Ritchie said the parade usually includes about 20 vendors, selling anything from cotton candy to candy apples.

Mayors of both Landis and China Grove — James Furr and Don Bringle — both said the parade always draws a nice-sized crowd.

“I think it’s an important function for the community and obviously, a lot of our citizens agree,” Furr said.

Bringle added that the importance of the parade to the South Rowan community is evident just by looking at the crowded streets.

“The sides of the streets are full and the participation from the community is just tremendous,” Bringle said.

Ritchie said she particularly enjoys seeing the various homemade floats that are constructed for the parade.
