SALISBURY — Salisbury’s Community Appearance Committee and Housing Advocacy Commission will host Spring Clean ’19 Day on Saturday to kick-start education about littering.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, residents can help pick up trash around the city.

“It’s unfortunate that litterbugs don’t respect our environment nor the beauty of Salisbury,” said Jane Creech of the Community Appearance Committee. “In partnership with code enforcement, public services and the Salisbury Housing Advocacy Commission, we decided to do something about it. Spring Clean ‘19 Day on May 11 comes at a great time — just before we welcome tens of thousands to visitors to Salisbury for the Cheerwine Festival.”

City Councilwoman Tamara Sheffield said she and other residents have noticed the amount of trash in the city and wanted to start a trash pick-up day to educate and prevent littering.

Sheffield said growing up, she remembers local and national campaigns against littering, and now there aren’t any. She would like to lead education efforts and show the importance of not littering.

The cleanup will focus on nine areas in Salisbury. Sheffield is calling for residents to band together to give several hours of their weekend to pick up trash.

“Let’s go band together,” Sheffield said. “We all have a stake of it.”

Alyssa Nelson, the city’s staff liaison to the Community Appearance Committee, said the cleanup is to address the concerns of the two agencies.

“The commissions hope that this helps to bring awareness of the issue to Salisbury’s citizens but also is a workday for the community to tackle the issue together,” Nelson said.

Participants can check in at City Hall, at 217 S. Main St., to pick up equipment, coffee and water and to sign up for a block.

The designated areas include: Innes Street from Interstate 85 to Mahaley Avenue; Main Street from Five Points to the town of East Spencer; Julian Road from the fairgrounds to East Spencer; Fulton Street from Five Points to City Park; Confederate Avenue and around City Park; Brenner Avenue from Jake Alexander Boulevard to Statesville Boulevard; Mahaley Avenue from Statesville Boulevard to Novant Health Regional Medical Center; and Old Concord Road-Julian Road to the town of Spencer.

If the Spring Clean ’19 is canceled, supplies will be available Monday through Friday during business hours.

Residents who assist in Spring Clean ’19 can use the hashtag #TrashTagChallenge or #SpringClean19 in social media posts as the trending hashtag for communities documenting litter pick-ups.
