BOILING SPRINGS —  Carson’s softball team, seeded 13th, won its second-round game in the 3A West playoff bracket on Thursday,

Carson beat fourth-seeded Crest, 2-1.

Kary Hales hit a two-run homer in the first inning to provide Carson’s offense.

Abbey Nixon got on base on an error to start the game. Two outs later, Hales homered to center field.

Carson pitcher Katie Jewell struck out five, walked one and allowed seven hits.

Jewell shut out Crest (25-2) until the seventh inning when opposing pitcher Sydney Kale drove in a run with her third hit.

Carson (17-9) had only four hits, with Hales getting two. Ellie Wilhelm and Liza Simmerson had one each.

Crest had a 23-game winning streak ended.

Carson’s third-round game will be at fifth-seeded North Buncombe.

Third-seeded West Rowan (21-3)  is scheduled to play its second-round game at home tonight against  Rockingham County (14-7).

Game time is 6 p.m.

Lexi Bryant and Regan Spencer hit home runs to power North Davidson to a 12-2 win against Central Davidson in a 2A playoff game on Thursday.

Korina Lookabill homered for the Spartans.

Ellie Goins drove in two runs with two doubles, and  Kali Morton pitched a complete game as Mooresville beat Hough 8-6 in a 4A playoff game on Thursday.

High school baseball

BOILING SPRINGS — West Rowan ended the season with an 8-0 loss at second-seeded and undefeated Crest on Thursday in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

The Falcons (19-7) got only three hits against Crest’s Trevor Nanney.  Nanney struck out 10.

Cullen Davis took the loss for the 18th-seeded Falcons.

Crest (27-0) got homers from Michael Greene and CJ Mayhue.

CONCORD — East Rowan (17-11) ended the season with a wild, 19-12 loss at Cox Mill on Thursday in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Sixth-seeded Cox Mill (20-6) led 9-0 after an inning and 13-2 after two innings, and the Mustangs couldn’t fight all the way back, even with a seven-run fifth inning.

Chandler Riley hit an early homer for Cox Mill and drove in four runs.

Seeded 11th, East received 12 walks and four HBPs, so the Mustangs had plenty of baserunners. East had eight hits.

Jake Hunter had three RBIs. Blake White had two hits and two RBIs. Maddox Henderson and Wayne Mize had two RBIs each. Charlie Klingler had two hits.

Carson plays at home tonight against (Asheville) A.C. Reynolds at 7 p.m. in a 3A second-round contest.

Deacon Wike (7-1, 1.54 ERA) is expected to pitch for the top-seeded Cougars (24-2) against the 16th-seeded Rockets (13-9).

Davie County plays at home tonight at 7 p.m. against Grimsley in a second-round 4A contest.

Davie (15-9) had a first-round bye. Carson Whisenhunt is the probable pitcher for the War Eagles.

Chris Villaman struck out 15 batters and also hit a home run as Ledford beat Reidsville 5-0 in a 2A East  second-round playoff game on Thursday.

In a 4A playoff game on Thursday, Josh Hartle and Will Rice combined on a shutout to lead Reagan to a 6-0 win against Ragsdale.

Three North Rowan Cavaliers plan to sign next week.

Linebacker Nautica Patterson is headed to Greensboro. Linebacker/ safety Tyzai Lyles is headed to N.C. Wesleyan and Benjamin Caldwell plans to sign with Winston-Salem State.

Carson announced that Mark Spry will be continuing his basketball career and education at Pfeiffer.

College basketball

Vernon Long, who starred at A.L. Brown in the 1960s, has been elected to the Lenoir-Rhyne Sports Hall of Fame.

Long was a standout guard on the A.L. Brown teams that won the 1967 and 1968 WNCHSAA championships before having a great career at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Long was A.L. Brown’s first black athlete when he   took the court in 1965 for a game against West Rowan.

Mid. school volleyball

West Rowan finished the regular season with a 14-0 record and is the top seed for the tournament that starts on Saturday.

Players of the year for West were Madelyn VonCanon (offense) and Brooke Kennerly (defense). Ashlee Ennis was MVP.

Southeast is seeded No. 2 for the tournament.

  

Mid. school soccer

West Rowan’s   boys ended the regular season with a 5-1 win against North Rowan.

Defensive standouts for the Bulldogs (3-7-4) were   goalkeeper Juan Arteaga, Juan Calleja, Juan-Pablo Jimenez, Adrian Stocktonand Zion Johnson.

Mason Quarles had two goals and one assist.

Andres Saucedo had an assist. Gio Romero scored a goal. Adrian Aragon and Franco Reyes had a goal and an assist.

West Rowan’s girls beat North Rowan, 6-0.

  Defensive standouts were Emily Kelly in goal, Evelyn Kwitowski, Emily Hitchings and Anna Parrish.

  Lesli Guerrero had four assists. Anna Mead scored four goals and had an assist for the Bulldogs (10-4).

Allison Campos had an assist and Brittany Vanhoose had two goals.
