SALISBURY — Shannon Bergland enjoys drinking beer.
She and her husband, Todd Parham, were visiting Salisbury when they noticed there was no craft beer bottle shop here.
“We just came down to visit the breweries, and while we were here we were walking around and we were like, ‘Wow, there’s no bottle shop here.’ Two breweries and (on) menus at your restaurants, the beer selection is huge. So that just goes to show that people here have knowledge about beer,” Bergland said.
They began thinking about opening a second location of Bottle & Can in Salisbury. Their first is in Asheboro.
Bergland looked up the profile of Salisbury and began talks with the owners of New Sarum Brewery.
“They were like, ‘Come. Do it. People will love it. We’re going to introduce you as well,’” she said. “We wanted people to talk about it. And just everyone we’ve talked to has just been positive.”
On Thursday, Bergland opened Bottle & Can at 116 W. Innes St. Inside, it is small but mighty. The shop has eight beers on tap and serves more than 200 bottled beers. Customers can have a beer or two or grab several beers to take home to enjoy. She calls it a “come, discover and take home” place.
“We really just want to be a cool, fun place for you to have a beer or two talking to your friends and grabbing some to-go,” Bergland said. “I want to be that community, little shop where you know me and I know you, and I can call you and say, ‘I got something that you’re going to love; come and get it.’”
The shop will serve beers made in North Carolina and across the country.
“We try to bring the best of the best of what North Carolina has,” Bergland said.
She has done her homework, which means drinking a lot of beer. When she and Parham have free time, they go to breweries and bottle shops to taste and take some home.
Her expertise will allow her to offer advice to customers about what to drink. They can try the ones on tap.
“It is about tasting things,” she said. “It’s about, ‘I like this, but I didn’t like this’ or ‘I like this. What do you have similar?’”
“The ultimate goal is for you to try new things and take these things home,” she said. “You don’t have to be out and about to have good beer. That’s why so many of them come in cans now so you can take them with you.”
The shop also sells bottles of wine, but Bergland wants to focus on beer.
Bottle & Can will create a community, Bergland said.
“We really want people to talk,” she said. “I want them to talk to each other. I want them to discuss beer, and I want it to be community. I don’t want it be like you zone out into your own thing.”
Bottle & Can is open from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 2 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
