In the Division II baseball playoffs, third-seeded Catawba takes on the sixth-seeded Young Harris Mountain Lions (35-19) tonight at 7 p.m. in the first game of a double-elimination sub-regional hosted by Newberry.

If Catawba (42-12) wins tonight in the three-team sub-regional, the Indians will play Newberry on Friday night. If Catawba loses, it will play Newberry in a Friday afternoon game.

Tickets are $10 each day,  with a $5 price for students.

The winner of the sub-regional will advance to a best-of-three super regional series against the other Southeast sub-regional winner.   That sub-regional is hosted by top-seeded North Greenville and also includes Mount Olive and Lincoln Memorial.

College golf

UNC Greensboro men’s golf shot 275-286-297 and completed the NCAA Stanford Regional on Wednesday in 11th place.

Sophomore Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) led the Spartans with rounds of 68-72-72 and tied for 21st at 2-over.

Catawba Classic

CHINA GROVE — The Catawba Football Golf Classic, in its 25th year, was held last Friday at Warrior Golf Club.

The event was supported by 48 teams and 192 golfers, raising $65,000 in support of the Catawba football program.

Chiefs Club board members Bill Hall and Bob Setzer, tournament directors, selected David Bennett and Nick Means as “co-captains” for the event. Bennett, head coach at Catawba in 1995-2001, is credited with starting the tournament 25 years ago. Means played at Catawba in 1999-2002.

Current Catawba head coach Curtis Walker and Warrior pro Brian Lee were also instrumental in the success of the tournament, according to Jeff Childress, Catawba associate athletic director for development.

High school track

3A and 2A state championship meets will be held  in Greensboro at North Carolina A&T on Friday.

1A and 4A championship meets are on Saturday.

Admission is $10. Parking also is $10.

High school hoops

Carson standout Cole Perry, a 6-foot-4 guard and a first team all-county player as a senior, committed to Southern Wesleyan.

The East-West boys basketball rosters have been finalized. The game is set for July 15 in Greensboro.

The West team includes North Stanly’s Bryson Childress, North Davidson’s Themus Fulks and two players from Southwest Guilford’s 3A state champs.

High school baseball

Carson’s 3A fourth-round (state quarterfinal) home game against North Gaston is set for Friday at 7 p.m.

Carson (26-2) is the top seed in the 3A West bracket and has beaten Central Cabarrus, A.C. Reynolds and Southwest Guilford in the state playoffs  in low-scoring games.

Seeded 12th, North Gaston (22-5) has scored 22 runs while racking up playoff wins against Kings Mountain, Northern Guilford and West Henderson.

Three of North Gaston’s five losses were to second-seeded Crest and one loss was to a South Carolina team.

Baseball regionals are set for May 21-25.

State championships will be played on May 31-June 1.

  

Mid. school baseball

In conference tournament semifinals played on Wednesday, second-seeded  Mooresville beat Corriher-Lipe 15-4, while top-seeded Erwin rolled 14-3 against West Rowan.

Erwin will play Mooresville for the championship today at 4:30 p.m. at North Rowan High.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — Rubendy Jaquez hit a solo home run in the third inning, leading the Lexington Legends to a 4-2 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Legends and a six-game winning streak for the Intimidators.

The home run by Jaquez gave the Legends a 3-2 lead.

The Legends tacked on another run in the sixth when Juan Carlos Negret hit an RBI double, scoring Freddy Fermin.

Lexington left-hander Kris Bubic (4-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on just two hits over five innings. Opposing starter Taylor Varnell (3-2) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after giving up four runs and six hits over six innings.

For the Intimidators, Ian Dawkins singled three times.
