Dicy McCullough continues her series of children’s books, “Tired of …” with “Tired of Music,” a rhyming short book about learning to love music.

Little Annie is bored with music, but a new teacher inspires her to give it a try.

This book includes the author herself, a former music teacher, and Dr. W. Dwayne Robertson, or Dr. Rob, a local musician who has taught in the Rowan-Salisbury and Iredell-Statesville Schools.

Dr. Rob has a flair for the dramatic, and his tricks, like playing with his feet, make his students laugh.

Annie, the child featured in the book, complains, “John Allen loves music/but I don’t think it’s fun./I’m tired of music;/I’d rather play and run.”

Ms. Solo, Annie’s music teacher, is based on McCullough. Annie says, “Music’s hard for me./I sometimes wonder why./There is so much to learn./Ms. Solo says, ‘Just try.’”

Robertson has received the Order of the Longleaf Pine and has also taught at Salisbury Academy.

McCullough retired as a music teacher who taught at Cleveland and Woodleaf elementary schools, now combined into one school. The book is dedicated to those schools and the children who went there, along with faculty and staff.

Her other  “Tired of …” books have been about getting up in the morning and riding a school bus.

Jean Barlow is the illustrator of this book, and has illustrated most of the other books in the series. She was a reading tutor at Cleveland Elementary.

The book includes questions for discussion with children, such as “Have you had a chance to sing or play an instrument in a performance? How did it make you feel? Would you do it again?”

McCullough also honors the late Cindy Campbell Laffey, an energetic book publicist and part of the Farm at Weathers Creek.

With its lively illustrations and happy, musical theme, this is a book young children would enjoy.
