GREENSBORO — A.L. Brown’s versatile Josh Parks won two individual  championships in Friday’s 3A Track and Field Championships held at North Carolina A&T.

Parks won the 400 meters in 47.52 seconds and won the 110 hurdles in 14.24. He helped the Wonders win the 4×200 relay as well, teaming with Jalen Neal, Dezmond Adams and Marcus Chapman to run 1:26.87.

Parks, who was ninth in the 200, led the Wonders to a fourth-place finish with 31 points.

A.L. Brown gota point for eighth place in the 4×100 in a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.

East Rowan’s Sam Wall took fourth place in the triple jump with an effort of 45 feet, 1.75 inches.

East’s Christian Bennett  took sixth in the discus, throwing 148-4.

Carson’s boys got their only three points from wheelchair athlete William Fuller, the only competitor in the shot put, discus and 100. He got one point for each event.

Utah Brown was 15th in the 300 hurdles.

North Rowan’s boys competed in the 1A Championships on Saturday.

Adrian Rudisell’s fifth place in the discus (128-5)  provided the only points for the Cavaliers.

Nautica Patterson was ninth in the shot put.

In Friday’s 2A State Championships, Salisbury’s Tyrone Johnson took third place in the long jump with an effort of 21-9.

South Rowan’s Noah Julian was 10th in the 1600, while Brenden Finger was 11th in the high jump.

Girls track

GREENSBORO — North Rowan’s La’Kayla Birst tied for second place in the high jump in Saturday’s 1A State Championships. She cleared 5 feet.

Birst also was ninth in the 300 hurdles.

In Friday’s 2A Championships, South Rowan’s Madison Lowery was ninth in the 1600 and 10th in the 3200.

South’s Taylor Chapman was ninth in the 100 hurdles. Janiya Downs tied for 11th in the high jump.

South’s 4×800 team placed 10th.

Carson’s Iyonna Parker  was 15th in the shot put.

Legion baseball

Rowan County starts American Legion baseball  play tonight at 7 p.m. with a game at Holt-Moffitt Field against Davidson County.

Rowan plays its first four games on the road and will be at Greensboro on Monday, at Concord  on Wednesday, and at Kannapolis on Thursday. The first scheduled home game is against Kannapolis on Friday.

Mocksville lost on Saturday to Randolph County, 9-4.  David Highman homered for Mocksville.

HS fishing club

An organizational meeting for a Rowan County High School & Youth Fishing Club will be held at South Rowan  High  at 5 p.m. today.

The meeting is for parents, middle school and high school students and interested community members.

College softball

In the first semifinal of the 2019 ECAC Baseball Championship on Saturday afternoon, top-seeded Pfeiffer (29-8) defeated fourth-seeded Wilson College, 10-2, to advance to the championship game.

  Surry Community College  sophomore Jacob Tuttle (A.L. Brown) was named  the Region X Pitcher of the Year.

South Rowan Y

The South Rowan Ymca has summer basketball camps instructed by Damien Argrett, former South Rowan, Pfeiffer and European professional player.

The 9th annual Summer Jam Evaluation camp  is June 17-20 from 8 until 3.  Cost is $95 for members, and $115 for potential members. Camp is for players who will be in grades 3 through 9.

Participants will receive a T-shirt, snack, and lunch. July 15 is the date for the Combine + Skills Clinic from 8 until 12.

Grade groups for the  camp are 4-6, 7-8, and 9-11.   Limited number of spots in this camp. Cost for this program is $30 for members $30 and $45 for potential members.   

Shooting Clinic is July 22-24 from 9 until noon. Camp is for players who wil be in grades 3-9. Cost is $60 for members and $75 for potential members.
