SALISBURY — A vote to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the “born alive” abortion bill is scheduled in the state House Wednesday.

The Senate on April 30 voted 30-20 to override the veto, enough to meet the three-fifths threshold.

Sen. Carl Ford, R-33, is a sponsor of the Senate bill.

Supporters in the House had delayed a vote until they were sure they had enough votes for the override.

Rep. Harry Warren, R-76, previously voted for the bill. He said he hopes his colleagues can put principle above politics.

Reps. Larry Pittman, R-83, and Julia Howard, R-77, also voted for the bill. The House passed it 65-46 on April 16.

Pittman is the sponsor of the companion bill in the House.

Cooper vetoed the bill on April 18. “Laws already protect newborn babies and this bill is an unnecessary interference between doctors and their patients,” Cooper said. “This needless legislation would criminalize doctors and other health care providers for a practice that does not exist.”
