Carson pitcher/third baseman Cole Hales is on the 3A All-State team announced by the North Carolina Coaches Association.

Hales batted .350, scored 32 runs and drove in 22 in 32 games for  the Cougars (28-4).

A Coker signee, Hales had an 11-1 record with a 1.37 ERA. He saved another game and struck out 92 in  76 2/3 innings.

Hales was named North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year and is the Patrick Snider Memorial Award winner as the Post’s  Rowan County Pitcher of the Year.

He’s playing for the Rowan County American Legion team for the first time this summer.

Area players on the All-State teams include Davie County pitcher Carson Whisenhunt and catcher Aaron Williams, who made the 4A squad.

State champion Mooresville’s Justin Poris and Hickory Ridge’s Nolan DeVos and Reagan’s Josh Hartle made the 4A team.

Central Cabarrus’ Sam Yelton, the South Piedmont Conference Player of the Year, made the 3A team.

On the 2A All-State team are Ledford’s Chris Villaman and Jake Stroud and North Davidson’s Merritt Beeker.

North Stanly’s Rhett Lowder, Carson Lowder and Hunter Sells made the 1A All-State team.

Signings

Salisbury’s Cam Gill signed with Virginia University-Lynchburg.

Gill was a multi-position player for the Hornets and was used as a defensive back, receiver and kick returner. He was the Post’s Special Teams Player of the Year for his work as a returner.

South Rowan basketball player Jarron Hines, who was second team All-Rowan County and All-Central Carolina Conference, is headed to St. Andrews.

College baseball

Eight days at the USA Baseball National Training Complex came to an end with Tampa winning the DII baseball championship on Saturday.

The second-seeded Spartans defeated top-seeded Colorado Mesa 3-1 for their eighth national title.

Local golf

Salisbury’s Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) is playing in the  59th North Carolina Amateur that will be held at the Gaston  Country Club on June 13-16.

Wood bat baseball

The Salisbury Stallions (1-3) lost 4-3 to the Kernersville Bulldogs on Thursday and were rained out on Saturday.

The Stallions are scheduled to host the Roanoke Rails today at 2 p.m. at West Rowan High.

Legion baseball

Rowan County will make up a rainout vs. High Point at home on Thursday, June 13.

Rowan’s game with Stanly County that was rained out on Friday will not be made up.

The teams couldn’t find a makeup date.

South softball camp

South Rowan Youth Softball Camp at South’s field will be held June 24-26 from 9 until 12.

Camp is for grades 1-8.

Cost is $75 and includes  a camp T-shirt.
