The Rowan County American Legion team’s baseball game at Randolph County was washed out on Wednesday.

Rowan (12-4) plans to make up one of last week’s rainouts tonight at home at 7 p.m. against High Point Post 87 (6-4).

Rowan County is scheduled to play three games in the North Carolina/South Carolina Challenge this weekend in Newberry, S.C.

Rowan plays Florence at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by a game against Chapin-Newberry (3-4) at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Rowan plays Sumter (8-2) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Randolph County and Shelby are the other N.C. teams in the event.

Rowan has played in five previous challenges and has an 8-6 record.

Left fielder Wayne Mize leads Rowan with a .537 batting average, three homers, eight doubles and 30 RBIs.

Jordan Goodine, who has played first base and outfield, is batting .364 with 24 runs scored, 13 RBIs and eight steals.

Catcher Bo Rusher has knocked in 12 runs, while infielder Steven Smith has 11 RBIs.

In 22 at-bats, right fielder Luke Barringer has three homers and 10 RBIs.

Shortstop Zeb Burns is batting .375.

Rowan still hopes to get Chandler Lippard, who had 83 RBIs the past two seasons, back from a hamstring injury.

On the mound, Scout Nichols, Jonathan Spry, Daniel Sell and Bryson Wagner have picked up two wins apiece.

Junior Legion

Carson won against Stanly County 10-2 on a rainy Wednesday.

Dylan Driver and Aaron Bradshaw had two hits each for Carson, and Connor Rayfield had two RBIs.

Mason Duren was the winning pitcher.

Minor leagues

Levi Michael (North Davidson, UNC) is playing shortstop for the Sacramento River Cats,  the Triple A team of the San Francisco Giants.

He has seven homers and 26 RBIs this season.

Michael, 28, was a first-round draft pick  by the Minnesota Twins in 2011.

He’s married to a girl from Salisbury — Hayley Mikkelson.

Former Catawba star Craig Brooks is having a great season for the Tennessee Smokies, the Double A team for the Chicago Cubs.

Brooks has fanned 41 in 25 1/3 innings. He’s 1-0 with seven saves in 18 relief appearances. Hitters are batting .116  against Brooks.

Former Catawba catcher Zac Almond is playing for the Kane County Cougars in the Chicago suburbs.

Almond was a 35th-round pick by Arizona in 2017.

He has two homers and 19 RBIs this season and is batting 220.

Former Catawba Indians Bryan Blanton (Yankees) and Chris Dula (Brewers) haven’t pitched for a while. Both probably will be back in action when short-season  minor leagues start later this week.

Intimidators

GREENVILLE, S.C.—  ­ Jordan Wren hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, leading the Greenville Drive to a 3-1 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday.

The double by Wren scored Devlin Granberg and Tyler Esplin to give the Drive a 2-1 lead.

The Drive tacked on another run in the fifth when Esplin hit an RBI single, driving in Grant Williams.

Greenville right-hander Chase Shugart (2-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Opposing starter Davis Martin (3-6) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after allowing three runs and eight hits over five innings.

Pro basketball

Keshun Sherrill  (West Rowan) finished his second pro season in the Netherlands in May.

Sherrill averaged  team highs of 14.8 points and 4.0 assists for the Den Bosch New Heroes.

He’ll spend most of his offseason in Augusta, Ga., where he starred in college, but he’ll be back home this weekend for Father’s Day.

HS basketball

A.L. Brown’s Elijah Isom has signed with Johnson & Wales.

As a senior, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Isom averaged 8.9 points and 5.3 rebounds for a 21-8 team coached by Shelwyn Klutz.

HS track

The Lexington Dispatch reported that South Davidson’s Everette Rhymer, 1A state champ in the 800 meters  in 2018 and runner-up this season,  signed with Catawba.

Legion softball

Rowan County lost a doubleheader to Union County, 3-0 and 5-1, on Tuesday.

North baseball camp

North Rowan head baseball coach Mike DeSantis’  Frontline Baseball Camp will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23 from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Sign up on June 21 at the North Rowan High baseball field from 5-8 p.m. and the $85 camp will cost only $50.

That  includes breakfast, lunch and Gatorade. There’s a family discount of two for $95.

The camp will be held  at North Rowan High and is for Little League and middle school ages.
