The High School Junior Civitan Club from North Hills Christian School went to the Rowan Helping Ministries warehouse to pack food boxes.
“To serve the community is to serve God,” said Mariah Murdock, the club’s vice president.
This wasn’t the first time North Hills has served through the ministry. Two years ago, the school’s basketball team packed food boxes in Rowan Helping Ministry’s old warehouse, and last April, a group of eight seniors cooked and served a meals at the nonprofit’s kitchen.
The 11 students said the experience was enjoyable and amazing.
“It was a wonderful opportunity that I was honored to participate in,” said sophomore Sarah Lynn Carlton.
Each month, roughly 50,000 pounds of food are donated to Rowan Helping Ministries, and on average, boxes are given to 55 households a day, five days a week. The Junior Civitan Club put together almost all of the 300 boxes needed for an entire week. The students packed milk, oats, green beans, applesauce, black-eyed peas, sweet peas, peanut butter and other foods.
Rowan Helping Ministries is adding a new facility which will become the new food kitchen. This new kitchen will be able to host 400, compared to the current facility, which can hold approximately 60. The clothing area and food pantry will stay in their current location, but will be renovated to make more room.
