Area Sports: Intimidators roll

KANNAPOLIS— Romy Gonzalez drove in four runs, while Alex Destino and Corey Zangari drove in four and three, respectively, as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 14-6 on Thursday.
With the game tied 2-2, the Intimidators took the lead for good with six runs in the second inning. Zangari hit a three-run home run en route to the six-run lead.
The Intimidators later added two runs in the third and four in the fifth to put the game away.
Kannapolis starter Sam Long (3-1) picked up the win despite allowing four runs over five innings. Opposing starter Luis Nova (1-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after giving up eight runs and five hits over two innings.
Mason Martin homered and doubled, driving in three runs and scoring a pair for the Grasshoppers.
Local golf
Salisbury golfer Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot 36-34 — 70 on Thursday and is tied for fifth in the 59th North Carolina Amateur Championship being played at Gaston Country Club.

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) has shot 75-72 — 147 for the first two rounds of the Sunnehanna Amateur being played in Johnstown, Pa.
Lyerly is tied for 62nd.
Learfield Cup
In the Learfield IMG Directors Cup standings that reflect overall athletic excellence, Queens University of Charlotte finished fourth nationally in D-II, while Wingate was 16th.
Legion baseball
The Rowan County-High Point game was rained out on Thursday.
Rowan has two games scheduled today in Newberry, S.C. Rowan plays Florence at 5 p.m. and Chapin-Newberry at about 7:30 p.m. to start the NC-SC Challenge.
Rowan (12-4) plays Sumter in an early game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Randolph County and Shelby are also in the Challenge.
Rowan is scheduled to start divisional play at Mocksville on Sunday.
Junior Legion
East Rowan won 4-1 against Kannapolis Post 115 on Thursday.
Dylan Valley and Chance Mako did the pitching. East got key hits from Tristan Miller and Jacob Causey.

Mocksville rolled 11-1 against North Iredell on Thursday.
Ethan Wilkins and Bevin Arey went 3-for-3 for Mocksville, while Landon Lowthorp pitched all five innings.
Lady Legion softball
Kannapolis edged Davidson County 5-4 in nine innings on Thursday.
