SALISBURY — Downtown galleries and shops are preparing for an influx of patrons for next week’s Gallery Gallop.

“Gallery Gallop is pretty much a celebration of art in downtown Salisbury,” said Latoya Price, events coordinator for Downtown Salisbury Inc. “Artists come out to showcase and demonstrate their art.”

It’s a way for artists to sell their works as well, she added.

Gallery Gallop is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and is being organized by Downtown Salisbury, Price said. It will include live music and entertainment, downtown gallery tours and family activities, she said.

“In order for artists to participate (all the artwork) has to be handmade,” Price said.

The event will not only engage residents with local galleries but will bring artists from throughout North Carolina to Salisbury, Price said.

Each artist’s work will be placed in front of or inside a downtown businesses, she said.

The name comes from the 1992 Gallery Gallop, which was “an old-fashioned evening of browsing and shopping,” according to a 1992 flyer. It was resurrected in 2012, Price said.

Galleries and art shops have special activities planned.

Isabell Harstell, manager of Fine Frame gallery and frame shop, will give demonstrations on how she does her drawings.

Harstell said Gallery Gallop is a way to get the community engaged in art.

Salisbury has grown a lot in the past year, Hartsell said. There is an art scene on every block, and Gallery Gallop will show that Salisbury has a focus on art, she added.

Pottery 101, a gallery at 101 S. Main St., will host demonstrations on how to create pottery outside the shop, said Kelsey Sorensen, a pottery teacher.

Pottery 101 is expecting to stay pretty busy, Sorensen said. This is the second time Pottery 101 has participated, and last year was lots of fun, she said.

Old Sarum Gallery, at 124 W. Innes St., will showcase its art, said owner Davis Cooke. The gallery specializes in 19th- and 20th-century art and restorations, Cooke said.

Off Main Gallery, at 114 E. Council St., will have a special sale with any painting for $10, said owner Clyde.

“Everybody needs a little art in their life,” Clyde said.

East Square Inc., a glass studio, will host demonstrations by co-owner Syed Ahmad on how he makes glass artwork, said co-0wner Whitney Peckman.

Gallery Gallop is a wonderful way for people to meet the city’s downtown artists, Peckman said.

Live entertainment and music will be staged at several locatoins. The Kitchen Store, 106 N. Main St., will feature Lisette Rodriguez from 6 to 8 p.m. Salisbury Antiques, 111 S. Main St., will host Daisy Clover from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Mama Tried from 7 to 9 p.m.

Allied Finance, 231 S. Main St., will host Spotlight Dance Company and East Coast Giant Stilt Walker from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
