Area Sports: Rowan 8U softball wins district, will host state tourney

It could be another strong softball summer for Rowan Little League.
Rowan’s 8U all-star team went undefeated in District 2 play and beat host Davie County 21-9 for the championship on Wednesday.
The next step for Rowan is the state tournament, and Rowan will be the host team for that event at Salisbury Community Park.
The state tournament starts on July 5.
Lady Legion softball
The Rowan County Post 112 senior team was rained out again on Thursday.
The next scheduled game for the Rowan team, which is in its third season, will be on Tuesday, June 25, against Forsyth County.
That’s the first scheduled home game for Rowan. The team will play two five-inning games at the East Rowan High field. Game 1 starts at 7 p.m.
Rowan is also at home on June 27, with a doubleheader scheduled against Iredell County, which has several West Rowan players on the roster.
That will be a special “Veterans Night,” with recognition of veterans prior to the game. Food will be provided for all veterans attending. Veterans should arrive at the field no later than 6:15 p.m.

Rowan also has a junior softball team for the first time this season.
Summer baseball
Austin Love (West Rowan, UNC) will pitch in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League this summer for the Orleans (Mass.) Firebirds.
Minor leagues
Catawba closer Peyton Williams received a $125,000 signing bonus from the Atlanta Braves reports MLB Draft Tracker.
The 20th-round pick will start his pro career next week with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Braves.

MLB Draft Tracker also reports a $125,000 signing bonus for Ike Freeman (East Rowan, UNC), the 14th-round pick of the Cleveland Indians.
Freeman made his pro debut on Tuesday with one of the Indians’ two teams in the Arizona Rookie League.
Freeman was in the starting lineup on Thursday night, batting second and playing third base in a game that started at 9 p.m. EST.

KANNAPOLIS— Davis Martin allowed just three hits over seven innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Augusta GreenJackets in a 3-0 win on Thursday.
Martin (4-6) picked up the win after he struck out six and walked one.
In the second inning, Kannapolis went up 1-0 on a home run by Michael Hickman. The Intimidators scored again in the sixth when Lenyn Sosa hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Corey Zangari.
Gregory Santos (0-3) went five innings, allowing one run and two hits in the SALgame.
Jr. Legion baseball
West Rowan rolled 10-0 against East Davidson on Thursday.
Zander Burton was the winning pitcher.
Andrew Kennerly went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two steals.
Ben Sweet had two hits
Calen Lawson had two hits and scored two runs. Brandon Foster scored two runs.
