Jeff Long: community service

It seems today that every time I open a newspaper or turn on the TV, there’s some kind of controversy. In other words, it’s almost as if each individual’s opinion is more important than the situation is for all parties affected. If our society is to survive both peaceably and productively, we are going to have to try to respect and understand each other’s opinions, working for a mutual goal. One that’s good for everyone.

A verse that came to mind while pondering on this, is one believed to have been written by the Apostle Paul. Now Paul is a controversy of his own. He went from hunting down Christians and persecuting them when he was known as Saul, to Paul: one who with God’s guidance took a small section of Christianity (Judaism), and made it a worldwide faith open to everyone.

The verse that came to mind is Romans 12:2,” And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” I believe this verse is telling us that once we go from our Saul, (sinful, lost unbeliever) to Paul, ( accepting Jesus as our savior) that our life’s way undergoes a change (transformation). We go from hating to loving each other no matter what differences we have.

I would like to challenge members of our community to be pioneers; ending the division created by our individual opinions, through understanding and compromising with each other for the better of our community. Let our neighbors see that we are transformed, and will not let our individuality cause the total collapse of our community. This may have a domino effect, where other communities follow our example. Jesus said it best in Matthew 12:25,” And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, ” Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:””

So believe in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, ask God for forgiveness from your sins, study His word and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Then with this transformation, accept the fact that we are all different and disagree on matters that challenge our individuality, but don’t let that divide the community. Remember, if we fall, it won’t be because of outsiders; it will be because of our weaknesses due to divisions within ourselves.

God bless all!
