SALISBURY — A Salisbury man and woman were charged this week with drug and weapons offenses after a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Long Ferry Road.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Jerry Dean Sadler, 40, of the 500 block of Charolais Drive, with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Crystal Dawn Smith, 35, also of the 500 block of Charolais Drive, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance Schedule II and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials said a deputy stopped their vehicle at 9:30 p.m. Monday. Smith was the driver, and two other people were in the vehicle, according to a sheriff’s report.

When asked if there were any weapons in the vehicle, the deputy was told there was a gun was in the glovebox. Sadler said he did not have a gun permit. The deputy found a Rossi 22-caliber revolver.

The deputy determined that Sadler is a convicted felon. He asked if there were any illegal substances in the vehicle. Smith told him there was a syringe in the side door and gave the officer permission to search the vehicle.

The deputy found a metal can on the driver’s side with batteries and a bag with a crystal-like substance inside. A box with a clear jar inside contained the same substance, which was believed to be methamphetamine.

A report said the deputy found a glass smoking device with a rubber hose inside a gray bag. The bag was found on the passenger’s side, but all of the passengers in the car denied that it belonged to them.

The deputy also found cosmetics in the bag.

The deputy seized 1 gram of meth and the gun.

Smith and Sadler were each issued a $5,000 secured bond. Sadler remains in the county jail, while Smith has since been released.

Sadler is on probation for a February conviction for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, and carrying a concealed weapon.

He has previous convictions for driving while impaired, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.
