SALISBURY — The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. today to consider renewal plans for four schools.

The plans for Granite Quarry Elementary, Shive Elementary, Hurley Elementary and Corriher-Lipe Middle were developed using charter-like flexibilities offered by the system’s renewal status.

At Granite Quarry, plans are to address deficits in social-emotional learning and to provide hands-on and personalized learning experiences for students. Measures include a schoolwide social-emotional curriculum for daily use as well as learning expeditions and student interest clubs with quarterly showcases.

A similar vision for clubs meeting student interests is proposed at Shive, helping address an identified need for more life experiences. Life-enrichment activities will also provide teachers with additional planning time each week.

Hurley Elementary fifth-graders will pursue needs outside learning experiences by applying for expeditions that cater to their interests. The school will also work to engage parents in the community in its green, sustainable focus.

Finally, Corriher-Lipe Middle seeks to provide opportunities for students to explore possible careers and passions through a wide variety of exploratory classes aligned to student interests such as dance, emergency management and life skills. The school will work to foster high quality student-teacher relationships and increase student engagement.

After hearing the presentations, school board members will have the opportunity to ask questions before possibly voting to approve the proposed plans.

The board will meet in the Wallace Educational Forum board room, 500 N. Main St.

Other business on the agenda includes:

• A resolution to transfer ownership of the old Cleveland School’s media center, kindergarten building and auditorium to Rowan County.

• The purchase of 365 iPads and accessories as part of North Rowan High School’s renewal plan.

• The career and technical education plan for 2019-20.

• Final budget amendments for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

• The capital outlay budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
