Area Sports Briefs: Hargrave honored as MEAC Defensive Player of the Year

South Carolina State junior Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was named the Mid-East Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year on  Saturday.

Hargrave ranks third in FCS with 16 sacks (for 199 yards) and ranks fourth in tackles for loss with 23.5.

Hargrave had 55  tackles, three forced fumbles, one fumble return for a touchdown,  eight quarterback hurries and two breakups.  He  earned national player of the week honors after tying a conference record with six sacks against Bethune-Cookman.

Women’s basketball

Catawba opened the game with a 15-0 run and cruised to a 63-46 win against Pfeiffer at Goodman Gym on Saturday.

Terri Rogers scored eight points in that early run and led Catawba (4-2) with 13 points.

Catawba was ahead  36-19 at halftime. Pfeiffer shot 19 percent in the first half and 27 percent for the game.

Carter Williams paced Pfeiffer (2-2) with 16 points.

Catawba plays at Livingstone on Wednesday.

Livingstone men

Livingstone lost 88-76 at Elizabeth City State on Friday in the ECSU Thanksgiving Classic.

Ty Newman scored 22 for the Blue Bears (2-1), while Eric Dubose scored 17. Shawn Jackson added 11.

Miykael Faulcon scored 26 points for the Vikings. Catawba transfer Elon Edwards scored eight.

Elizabeth City State (2-5) shot 54.8 percent and took advantage of 17 LC turnovers.

 •  Livingstone held on to beat Washington Adventist 102-98 in Elizabeth City State’s Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday night.

Shawn Jackson shot 12-for-17 and  poured in 33 points for the Blue Bears.

Dubose had  20 points and 11 assists.   Newman had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Dareese Johnson scored 10.

Livingstone (3-1) shot 49 percent. The Blue Bears had an 18-point lead cut down to a single point, but they held on with clutch free throws by Newman and Juwan Cole.

Livingstone plays against West Virginia State on Sunday at noon.

College men

A.J. Clark scored 29 points as Pfeiffer beat Tusculum 79-70 on Saturday.

• Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 12 points as GRU Augusta beat Shaw on Saturday.

Prep basketball

  D.J. Alexander scored a career-high 24 points and Deshawn Troutman had 22 as  Salisbury rolled to a 74-49 win against South Stokes on Friday in a holiday tournament in King.

Wes Fazia added 13 points for the Hornets.
