Area Sports: Kannapolis, Davidson win Legion games

The Kannapolis American Legion baseball team closed the regular season with a 5-3 win against Concord on Wednesday.

Last-place Kannapolis got good pitching from Luke Nelson and Chris Allen (seven strikeouts) to sweep the league games from first-place Concord.

Kannapolis got two hits from Chase Orrock and RBIs from Bryson Bebber and Zack Aigner.

Concord got two hits from Jose Vargas and Larken Lancaster.

Concord had already locked up first place and gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Kannapolis will play on the road Friday against  High Point at Finch Field, while Mocksville will open a playoff series on the road at Stokes County.

Mocksville and Kannapolis will host on Saturday.

Davidson County took second place in the Northern Division of Area III by holding off Randolph County 4-3 on Wednesday.

Davidson County (8-4) earned a first-round bye. Randolph County had already clinched first place in the division and a first-round bye.

Davidson scored four runs in the fourth, with Carson Simpson, Nathan Burton, Drew Wright and Austin Musgrave knocking in runs.

Tyler Smith pitched into the seventh inning. With Randolph runners at second and third in the seventh, Brandon Warlick got a strikeout for the final out.

Randolph got two hits each from Austin Curry, Blake Marsh and Trevor Marsh.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS—  Jeremy Fernandez hit a two-run single in the fifth inning, leading the Rome Braves to a 13-11 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday.

The single by Fernandez came in the midst of a four-run inning and gave the Braves a 6-5 lead. Later in the inning, Ariel Montesino hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Griffin Benson.

The Braves later added a run in the sixth and five in the eighth. In the sixth, Greg Cullen hit an RBI single, while Braden Shewmake hit a two-run double in the eighth.

Kannapolis saw its comeback attempt come up short after Romy Gonzalez hit a bases-clearing triple in the ninth inning to help cut the Rome lead to 13-11.

Rome starter Alan Rangel (7-4) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and five hits over five innings. Opposing starter Johan Dominguez (4-4) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after a rough outing in which he allowed seven runs and eight hits over four innings.

Johan Cruz homered and singled twice, driving in three runs and scoring a pair for the Intimidators. Corey Zangari homered and singled, driving home three runs.

Minor leagues

Cleveland prospect Ike Freeman (East Rowan, UNC) had a double and drove in two runs in a win on Wednesday in the Arizona Rookie League.

Freeman has eight RBIs and is batting .275.

Junior Legion

Three Rowan teams qualified for the Area III playoffs that start on Friday.

West Rowan plays at South Rowan in Game 1, while East Rowan opens a series at West Forsyth.

Game 2s  will be played at West Rowan and East Rowan on Saturday.

Summer softball

Taylor Walton (West Rowan) pitched the last inning on Wednesday as the Carolina Cardinals softball team beat the Dirt Divas (Ohio) in a national tournament in Colorado.

Baseball camp

The 31st annual Piedmont Area Pitcher/Catcher Camp will be held  on July 10-11 at North Davidson High for ages 6-18.

Cost is $75.

Instructors include former Davidson head coach Dick Cooke and Wingate pitching coach Dusty White.
