SALISBURY — In 2017, Woodleaf and Cleveland elementary schools were consolidated into West Rowan Elementary.

Since then, the Cleveland Elementary property has been given a new lease on life to house a branch of Rowan Public Library and a county emergency medical station.

 

A reader asked what the county plans to do with the Woodleaf Elementary property.

“If they’re going to take down Woodleaf, we want to leave something positive there,” said Greg Edds, chairman of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.

There has been discussion about putting a passive park on the property, said County Manager Aaron Church.

Unlike an active park, which might have tennis courts, a passive park could include walking trails and a picnic area.

There is some money in the budget for a park, Edds said.

County Commissioner Jim Greene is a liaison with the Parks and Recreation board, which can make recommendations about the possibility of a park. If that plan is decided on by the commissioners, the two boards can work together to create a park.

However, Church emphasized that the plan has not been approved yet, and there is no timeline for deciding what the property will be used for.
